Bottles, Rubber,* Substitute For Potash Advanced By W. L. Watson URGES FLORIDA FARM- ERS TO USE GROUND LIMESTONE. The stopping of the importa- tion of potash from Germany, the indefinite time before it can again be Jjmported and .its at- tendant effect upon the crops, according to 'Agricultural Ad- viser W. L. Watson, makes the use of ground limestone on the soil at the present time of unus- ually importance. About one ton to the acre, he thinks, would render available the na- tural potash in the soil and feed the plants for at least a year and also neutralize every unfavor- able chemical condition. i son has taken the matter up with several manufacturing firms and states that the previ- ous difficulty of the cost of the ground limestone being too high seems to be done away. One of the offers, he thinks, particu- larly advantageoud, the price be- ing $1.50 per ton sent f. 0. b. in car lots from Ocala. He stated that he would be delighted to give any one interested further details as to how, where, when and why to get it. In this connection, Mr. Wat- son further stated ,hat there was not an acre in the county, or the State for that matter, that would not be greatly bene- fited by the use of this ground limpstone at the pesent time. In case any of the farmers did not desire a full carload, he of- fered the suggestion that they buy in co-operation. It would not do, he continued, to use the lime excessively, year after year, as it would draw all of the resources out and impov-- erish the soil in time. It is, however, the most feasible means for securing relief from the German shortage, when the manufacturers either wont sell it or claim that they have none on hand, and will do no harm if properly administered. It is his opinion that the lime should be applied in the fall, He further added that many of the products which are usually hurt by the use of lime are the ones most ine need: of uotash, would be beneficial in that re- spect.—Jackisonville Metropolis. If a modern trans-Atlantic liner, some of which are capable of more ‘than 500 miles a day, set sail from Magellan’s starting point in Spain upon a voyage around the earth, and was able to maintain its highest speed throughout the journey, it would! arrive back in port in less than| two months of the day of sail- ing. The Panama canal would: not only eliminate the journey! ‘around South America but the cold and danger of a trip around Cape Horn. Likewise the Suez canal rempves the necessity of following the course around Af- rica and offers a safe, swift and comfortable voyage under trop- ical skies. The two canals have reduced the world voyage by at least 8,000 miles, making the to- tal length of the journey little more than 22,000 imiles accord- ing to the estimate of the Uni- ted States hydrographic bureau. Magellan’s ships would appear like pigmies beside the modern |ocean liners—all could be placed on a single deck of thelargest steamer. Their crews of 280 men would scarcely be enough to make up the gang of stokers that shovel coal into the boilers of some of the modern ships. The largest ship afloat today has a crew of more than 1,000 men. FLORIDA IS GREAT FOR | SUGAR CANE. ' There is hardly a county in Florida that will not raise a high .grade of sugar cane, yet com- and, if used properly, this lime mercially does not rank among our highest revenue producers, simply because it is not raised on an extensive scale. There is probably, however, no other crop that will produce as much revenue with as little expense as sugar cane.
