A half century ago there was no such thing known as the ‘army of the unem- ; ployed.’ It is a very poor brand of Democracy indeed which takes for | its premise the assumption that a few are born to own the earth, and to live in luxury and idleness, whlle: E the great majority—the plebelan : horde—are divinely destined to toil | and sweat, and like Lazarus of old, were a dozen men tramping the rall- road tracks out of work twenty or thirty years ago when extremely rich men were comparatively scarce, where. there is one now when multi- millionaires are numerous. The army of unemployed. in this coun- try right pow is for the most part made up of those who are profes- sional loafers and do not want to work, and there was probably never !a time in our history when there were So few real workingmen out of work as now. If we didn’t have rich men and plenty of them with their vast ag- gregate wealth in numberless labor. employing enterprises this favorable condition could mnot prevail, and when wa set up the conditions which deprive capital of the incitement to enterprise with a view to earning - | money and increasing rches, what’s to become of the factories and the railroads and all the other forms of productive wealth which now fur- nish employment to the working classes and without which the lat. ter would be in very truth an “army of the unemployed?” We know of no “brand of Democ- racy which takes for its premise the assumption that a few are born to own the earth and to live in luxury and idleness.” If the Eagle knows of any such gang of loafers as that and will point it out to us, we will cheerfully joln with that paper in roasting said gang in stason and out until it passes into innocuous de. suetude in the nery furnace of our incandescent verbiage; and if it sur- vives that treatment we will gladly adopt any other practcable method to spray these parasitic vermin out of existence that the Eagle may sug. gest. — e Yesterday the charming and pro- gressive celebrated in appropriate style the 17th anniversary of her birth- day and we join with all the rest East Coast city of Miaml| erated; they give the outsider a bad mmmm 3 TODAY’S BIRTHDAY HONORS E mmmm impression .—Zalfo Truth. We are with you on the snake proposition, brother, but before in- dorsing the rest of it we rise to ask it you include in the “wild animal stories” which are “usually much exaggerated” the justly celebrated fish stories of Bro. Jordan of the Punta Gorda Herald. These stories are a part of the classic faunal or piscatorial lore of the State and are never barred on grounds of inverac. ity from Florida papers. But per- haps fish are not wild animals, al- though whales are so classified, and it must be admitted that some of Bro. Jordan’s fish etories are whal- ! ing big ones. —ee What few patches of hide were left on that old civil war liar and + slanderer, Judge Mansfleld, of Steu- benville, Ohio, after the Telegram operated on him the other day were deftly removed yesterday by the Tampa Tribune. The rusty old cad may never know it, but he’s been skinned alive by us fellers down here in Florida and we done it to the, queen’s taste, too, you bet. And bad as it is, we'll match our gram. mar against his courage in war and veracity in peace. B . ——— The Zolfo Truth has this to say which finds very cordial apprecia- tion at these headquarters: “New papers and new homes for papers are getting to be every-day occurances in Florida. The latest in the home.building class is the Lakeland Evening Telegram, which will erect a three-story building 26x 125 feet. If Editor Hetherington’s new building reflects as much credit on the town as does his bright and sparkling newspaper, Lakeland will sure be justified in flapping her wings and crowing.” — (e To snub or not to snub?—that’s +*NB BVENING TEIBOGRAM, LARELAND, FLA, AUG. 8, 1913, Hon.
