Seattle, being the gateway to Alaska, will of course reap the greatest benefits, but the nation as a whole cannot help but feel the advantage also. Private monopoly sometimes professes to have the public’s welfare in mind. But we all know, from repeated sad experience, that its main motive is profit for the inside few. Only so far as that profit is advantaged by consideration of the con- sumer does the consumer get consideration. Usually the rule is to charge all the traffic will bear. Now, the plan for the opening of Alaska according to the provisions of the Poindexter bill reverses this completely. It takes away every incentive for greed in the development of Alas great deposits of natural treasure, It doesn’t destroy profit, but it proposes,a new division of profit. It allows profit not to the cunning, the remorseless, the unscrupulous, but to the efficient; NO, 138 SEATTLE, WASH., FRIDAY, AUGUST 8, 1913 ONE CENT EDITION and it checks the efficient from becoming greedy by providing that just in propor- tion as they are efficient they must share the proceeds of their efficiency with the consumers in whose service the efficiency is evolved. Uncle Sam, the agent of all the people, doesn’t need profit, that profit, to induce him to put his hands and mind to the task of lifting Alaska’s coal from where it has been hidden in the bowels of the earth to the avenues of transportation and sale, His profit comes in homes made warm, in new health put to human use, in cities made more prosperous. And so Uncle Sam is free, and he is the only business man who today is free, to turn the profits of a mining enterprise over to the faithful workers in the mines and on the railroads, and to the buyers of the coal, whose demand for the coal creates the market that gives the work to the workers. Of course, greed will fight Poindexter’s bill; but isn’t that a mighty good reason why we, the consumers of Seattle and the whole country, we, who want to sce in- dustry humanized and wealth justly distributed, should strongly support it? is, money ’s UNITED STATES READY FOR WAR IN MEXICO Most Beautiful Girl in the World | Poses Before Camera for The Star Trouble Expected When ie SEs ™ : PICKLES, HE CALLS GIRL SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 8, Business and Professional Men 2 AE Pe eo Express Themselves in Support of Alaskan Get-Together Plan —"Dear Pickles.” That w the pet name given Miss Marsha Warring ton by Maury |.
