[ TP DR YR LN OUR MOTHERS Blessings be upon the mother whko tries to understan! her children! sons and daughters alike will bless her, for it is such a comferting thing for any child to Iu able to say “moth- er understands The word understanding” is so full of mean ny in the mother world. It ewbiaces so many things in the child’s lite, as well as in the par- eat’s. It means sympathy—that sweet, sentle sympathy that is the golden key to the hearts of every child. It is no easy task to thoroughiy understand even one’s own children. Each individual child has his own small idiosynacasries; there are no two natures alike; each must be dealt with according to its own in- herited and acquired tendencies. Even if a woman is a mother, she cannot be expected to be a skilled mind reader; but she can observe ker children carefully, learning whai "'I they think and fee] and really need. ; { Onc important thing that every 7 mcther should remember is to con- 3 3 sider her own feelings, thoughts and b s MAKEfithem be“er acquainted neXt a um.s(:l:rlug the months previous 4 pay day by bringing them together Jii" ftr i Lm0 WO v L} L in this bank. “3You can always afford to saitanen o her in the uadorsand- % rg of her ¢ s imn d, [" . pllt Somethfllg in ‘he bank Start With She must be careful, however, not & to put too much faith in these things your nex' Pay envelope but must study the psychology cf the -~ childish mind and watch for little signs that cannot well be translated into words, but which, like straws in the wind, indicate the general trend of thought and reasoning. Just wishing to understand is not enough. A mother must show par- ticular interest not only in the big things, but in the little things her child does. Through this interest she must win their confidence, and nust be willing to listen patiently to wll their perplexities and troubles, their little problems, which to thein ore quite as important ag the tariif rcform or woman suffrage is to their parents. When mother cannot see the cause for ber child's shortcomings she should remember that no child is perfect and that many allowances must necessarily be made. If she knows in her heart that because of some inherited trait her child can- not Go a certain thing, or under cer- toin conditions is almost sure to act in a certain may, both she and the —_— ]| child can be saved much impatience and harsh judgment. 1 recall the story of a beautiful young girl in her seventeenth year who took her own life simply be- cause she had ‘“misunderstanding parents.” Her mother never took the trouble to understand her daugh- ter's intense temperament. This Is not the only tragedy that can be traced to a misunderstanding mother, and so I charge you, moth- ers, begin with the infant mind and make every effort to understand and sympathize with your children. Apmtylouhvllludethphh- proving the mouth should be to vate smiles. Not grins—you but smiles, vllelbflulhokdhp- piness and joy to the erate in a minute all the which have been years ln forming. Smiles will not remove those lines per- manently in a minute, but if the smiles are indulged in frequently they will soon blot out .all the objectionable g lines. Nothing mars the mouth more than : a fretful droop at the corners, and for| this a hearty laugh is the very best method of correction. Does this sound like nonsense? It is really the very best of common sense, and if you will notice the faces of your friends and the members of your family you will agree with me, I am sure. Without going very far afield you can find a dozen instances where smiles and laughter would so improve the shape or expression of the mouth that you would just long to suggest them for the purpose. In connection with the above direc- tions, thassage is an excellent method for improving the appearance of the mouth. The massage given for this purpose must be very gentle and should always have an upward trend. To keep the “Cupid’s bow,” which gives the lips such a delicately pretty outline, press the little crease in the upper lip gently every morning regu- larly. The best way to learn what your habitual expression is, is to stucy your face before a mirror, assuming :3 well as you can your habits of speech and laughter, as well as your ordinary expression when in repose. When you have learned your faults you can then set to work more intelligently to cor rect them. Serious defects of the mouth require the care of a specialist in facial surg- ery. Many ordinary defects, however, can be treated at home. ANSWERS TO QUERIES. Westbrook: Massage of the scalp is much better than vigorous brushing to | stimulate the circulation and increase the growth of halr. Surface friction l-i beneficlal when given very modente-‘ 1y, but the average person is apt to be too severe in their use of the hair| brush. Press the fingers firmly, but | not too heavily, on the scalp and move the scalp in small circles. Have the fingers separated a little and change them from place to place until the en- tire scalp has recelved the massage. Do not bruise the ' tissues—remember that gentle movements many times re- peated bring better results than too igorous massage. Jimsey: The reason why you do not | find benefit from the exercise you are ' taking is because you do not quite un- ' derstand how to do it. You must not' allow the knees to bend even slightly, but must hold them stif while you bring your hands up over your head 2 and then stoop forward and touch the | floor with your finger tips. When this | exercise is properly taken it strength- l ens the back, makes the back lad. waist muscles limber and also makes ! the waist more slender. N. L.
