Audubo CONTRIBUTED Eleven enthusiastic Audubon members of the Monroe County Au- dubon Society returned Monday, December 13 from Cuba, tired but happy and still thrilled over the beautiful country they had been privileged to see and especially over the sight of 22 species of»birds new to the group seen in four dif- férent habitats all within easy walking distance at Jibacoa Beach in Cuba. The Key West party was accord- ed the courtesy of a visit to Jiba- coa beach, a privately owned area through arrangements by Mrs. Kit- ty Mitchell Hill of Havana and Sr. Florentino Garcia of Jibacoa Beach. The group of nine that went by ferry on December 9 was met at Cardenas by Mrs. Hill and Sr. Gar- cia with three cars for transpor- tation to ‘Jibacoa. They drove first to Santa Cruz del Norte, a three hour trip, ar- riving at 9 p. m. instead of the 8 Hotel Regina where they were join- ed by Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Kirke | who flew over to Havana and reached Santa Cruz by bus. The mayor of Santa Cruz del Norte is also the proprietor of the Hotel Regina and welcomed the group graciously. Roses garlanded the long dining table set in an open porch-like area built out over the water of a little bay. The mayor topped off the dinner with a liqueur of creme de cacao with milk and cherry on stick .to stir it, — with iments. piloted the group over a country road along the coast to Jibacoa and distributed them into several efficiency units scattered here and there along a hill a few steps above the beach. The six women Mrs. Frances Hames, Mrs. Christine Bonney, Miss Hilda Cun- niff, Mrs. Howard Higbie, Mrs. Margaret Hundley and Mrs. Marie Cobb were housed, 3 to a unit, in two new efficien units with breezeway between them. Mr. Ste- venson and Mr. and Mrs. G. P. Lawrence were in a house on the hill above the road and Mr. and Mrs. Kirke were ‘way up on the hill facing the sea The group was awakened at day- break the next day by the call of the smooth - billed ani which is as cvmmon in Cuba as the palm war- bler is here. Spanish - speaking members made it easy for ones who knew little or no Spanish. Sr, Garcia and Mrs. Hill graciously helped. Sy, Garcia also used his ear to drive the group around. Mrs. Esther Prat Garcia joined the party on Friday and distributed lists which she had typed, of the Cuban birds we might see. She also sent over from her house the only coffee she had and some bread, su- gar and butter for the first break- fast. The group later shared their new coffee with her, as all the coffee in the little store was bought up. Sr. Garcia. arranged for the group to see birds in various loca- tions, starting with the lake and march and low hills near the sea, then the beach and then in two trips in his car to the top of the from the cottages close to the beach, The view from the top was breath-takingly beautiful. The coast lay spread out in coves, t and limestone’ cliffs, with ills and valleys inland. The sea rivaled the core of the water a- round our Keys. The landscape showed the characteristic Cuban Royal palms dotted here and there and another tree with huge, pal- mate leaves which were silvery | white underneath and shimmered |in the breeze. This tree is the Cuban Umbrella Tree (Cecropia peltata), From the top of the hill, which is landscaped | into a park, the group was guided by Sr. and Senora Garcia down through a steep, rocky ravine cloth- ed on both sides by untouched, ori-} | ginal forest. | This ravine is the habitat of the Cuban Tody, Trogon, Pygmy owl} and green woodpecker as well as/ other species.
