Try A ‘Quick Action’ Citizen Classi Salem Murder Trial Halted By Guilty Plea SALEM, Mass. #—Lorraine Eat- on Clark, 28, pretty mother of three young children, suddenly pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of second degree murder in the shooting-stabbing death of her hus- band and was sentenced to life in prison. The slender, brunette defendant’s plea was accepted by the court upon the recommendation of Dist. Atty. Hugh A, Cregg, the prosecu- tor. He told Superior Court Judge Charles Fairhurst of a plea by Melvin W, Clark, father of the stain man, fo save the “wreck” of the family of his son, Melvin W. Clark Jr., 29. Judge Feirhurst said, in im- fosing, sentence, that life at the state prison for women (Sherborn) is mandatory by law for second degree murder, Mrs, Clark stood up as sentence was imposed. Her lips quivered and her eyes became tear filled but she made no sound, Within two minutes she was ‘ed from the courtroom followed by her lawyer, C. Francis Leary. A 3% page confession by Mrs. Clark, which Cregg had labeled “too lurid” to dis¢lose public‘y, THE KEY WEST CITIZEN was submitted to the court for the record,-Cregg said it would not be _made public, adding “if Judge Fairhurst does not impound it I will.” The young husband was shot twice with a pistol. and twice stabbed during Palm Sunday week- end, last April 10-11, Mrs, Clark reported her husband disappeared after a bitter quarrel and later sued for divorce. * His unrecognizable body was found in June near the Merrimack River, into which Mrs. Clark said she had dumped it after dragging it from their cottage into the fam- ily car, Navy service finger prints established identity. With Cregg’s decision not to di- vulge details of the statement it appeared likely the motive will not become known. Jumper!
