Leigh. Tom Watson barred press and public while she testified, explaining he did so in the interests of the cou- ple’s four minor children. There was no request for secret testmony, however, when Dr. Mentzer gave in length his story of how a golfing friendship between him and Leigh had developed into a close attachment of Leigh for Mrs. Mentzer. Dr, Mentzer said he was a man tormented by the problem of hold- ing his wife against the attraction of a younger man and said Leigh and Mrs. Mentzer had sought a divorce. Transcript Released A transcript of Mrs. Mentzer’s testimony, released yesterday by Watson, showed she said Dr. Men- tzer had gone out with other wom- en, was in love with one of them, had asked for a divorce, and that} Mrs. Mentzer had attempted sui- cide as a result. The transcript showed Mrs. Men- tzer testified Dr. Mentzer told her in August of 1953 that he was in live with another woman and wanted a divorce. We discussed the play briefly and when she found that Tennessee Wii- liams’ plays aren’t exactly requir- ed reading for our teen agers, she seemed a little surprised. | 2 During the interview, Miss Alert Pilot Saves Boat Crew From Disaster Today The alert pilot of a single- engine cabin plane today saved three persons in a 14-foot. boat from possible disaster. S. D. Murphy, of Indianapo- lis, spotted the boat about six miles west of Key West. One man, he reported to the Civil Aeronautics Authority radio here, was standing up in the boat waving an oar to which was tied a white flag. Murphy contacted the CAA who in turn called: the Coast Guard. However, a cabin cruis- er was seen by Murphy who guided it to the 14-foot ‘boat. Tax Bills Are In The Mail More than 32,000 county tax statements were mailed yes- terday by the office of Howard Wilson, county tax collector. The 32,147 statements ‘total more than a million dollars. Wilson em ized that tax payers must bring or send the statement with the check or money. He also outlined the following discount schedule: Taxes paid in November get four per cent off; in December, three per cent; in January, two per cent; in Febfvary, one per cent; in March, no discount. Robert McBurney of the Shore Patrol stated in his report that while proceeding near the Sea Shell Motel he observed Perez hold- ing a woman who was trying to igtab his gun. Aided Chief He stated that he assisted the chief in “holding the woman while | the police patrol wagon was sum- moned. The woman grabbed him by the neckerchief and tried to choke him, he stated. The woman was forced to re- lease her grip when agthumb was forced into her back. Police officer Eugene Sanchez stated that when he arrived on the scene in the police patrol wagon he observed the woman who was trying to kick and bite the chief of = being held by the Shore Pa- trol. As far as the election of candidates goes, it will be a mere formality, However, voters will also approve or reject seven amendments to the Florida constitution. Proposed Amendments Here is a brief summary of the amendments in the order in which they will appear on the ballot: 1. Extended legislative sessions. This amendment would extend the sessions of the Florida legislature by 30 days and also raise the pay of the legislators, 2. Toll Road financing. This amendment would bar the use of state money for toll roads that en- ter or-run through more than three counties. 3. Adding county judges. This amendment would provide for addi- tional county judges in growing communities, 4; Added: time for signing or vetoing bills. This amendmeat would give the governor 10 addi- tional days to sign or veto bills after the legislative session ends, Proponents of this amendment say the 10 extra days should end ham ried decisions by the governor: 5. Tax assessing. This amend: ment would permit the consolida-+ tion of tax collecting and tax as sessing offices in all Florida coun- ties, if the muncipality requests it. 6. Monroe County tax assessor collector.
