The commission was asked for action on a ~ sed addition at the Hibiscus Motel. Owner of tne nivtel, Harry Mit- chell, made the request, which would have ordinarily been pre- sented to the city planning com- mission. Since that group has fail- ed to meet recently, the city com- mission has been forced to take over its activities New Units Mitchell plans the construction | of four new motel units, at the back of his lot, which will take the building beyond the line per- mitted by ordinance. In the motel section, zoned as Residence AB, a 20-foot setback is required between the rear of the building and the property line. After the commission had voted to authorize the issuance of a build- ing permit to Mitchell, pending the ) |drawing up of a variance ordin- ance, Carbonell said that he thinks ; |the zoning should be changed. “It's silly,” he said, “for these people to have to come to the city commission for passage of an or- dinance every time they want to|N expand.” Time Wasted He further pointed out that when the planning commission is active, the person applying for the vari- ance spends a great deal of time going first to the planning board and later waiting for the city board to act. ‘ “As soon as J. Y. Porter (city attorney) gets back, I am going to ask him to draw up an ordinance to change the motel setback,” Car- bonell said. He went on to say that he thinks motel owners should be given ‘as much leeway in the use of their property as are downtown busi- nesses, at least to the extent of having the setback permanently made 10 feet, rather than 20 feet. Quick Trip PASADENA, Calif. # — Young Ed Hannigan got home much fast- jer than he expected. Hannigan, 17, had turned his mo- torcycle toward the driveway of} his home yesterday when the throt- tle, jammed. The machine roared out of control and crashed against the curb, Hannigan was catapulted 20 feet through the air, landing on jhis front porch. After treatment at a hospital for head cuts he was released. He has had an average of from two to five men working on the boat and estimated it cost about $40,000 to build. Saved About $15,000 “But,” he added, “if you went out and bought a boat like that it would cost you about $55,000.” The Danil, with a 20% foot beam | and a 7%-draft, will be powered by a 170-horse power diesel. | After the launching the engine, fuel tanks and water tanks will be installed and the icehold will be completed. He also will build the pilot house and rig the boat after launching. Ramirez estimates that if every- | thing goes along all right it will be another seven weeks before the Danil catches her first shrimp. The Danil is of sawed frame construction, double kneed and floored. “The frames of all the other boats I kriow of,” Ramierez said, “have steamed and bent frames.” Yellow Pine Would The Danil has keel, planking and frames of long leaf yellow pine. Other boats, he added, are plank- ed with cypress or fir and have! oak frames. “From past experience,” Ram- irez said, ‘yellow pine is bet. It stands the heat and moisture of | this climate better than any other material.” . | The Danil takes its name from a niece and nephew of Ramirez— the nephew, Danny, and the niece, Nilda. The first boat Ramirez built was the BMO, named after his first three children — Barbara, Mary, 9, and Oscar, Jr., 7. BMO Launching He built the BMO on Windsor When the BMO was ready for launching, she was hauled to the Key West Shrimp Exchange and moved over the seawall by a drag- line. That was Oct. 1, 1951. “It wasn’t much trouble moving | her over the seawall,” Ramirez said. ‘‘The biggest trouble was in getting her out of the lot where she was built because of the over- head electric light wires.” The BMO is still owned by Ra- mirez and still shrimping out of Key West. It now is eaptained by Patrick Joyce.
