Page 10 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Saturday, September 18, 1954 Try A ‘Quick Action’ Citizen Classified Ad-Dial 2-566l or 2.566) ee ge assiied Ag— Dial 2266! or 2.5662 Night Worker Objects To Daytime Noise By RAY KOHM NEW YORK ® — As a news- man who toils in darkness and (tries to) sleeps days, I note with drowsy alarm a juuye’s ruling that coloratura Miriam Scott is entitled to air her arias all through the day, I have no quarrel with 25-year- old Miriam, who sings her pretty heart out in a third floor apart- ment in Sunnyside, Queens, which is several miles from where I live, But Mrs. Katherine Gibson, a waitress who works nights, lives in the same building on the same floor as Miriam, Mrs. Gibson de- scribes Miriam’s dulcet but ringing tones as no lullaby. » Mrs. Gibson, like me, necessarily likes to sleep of an afternoon. The Scott-Gibson affair got a vocal workout yesterday in Long Island City, Queens, Magistrates Court, Mrs. Gibson’s complaint (ais. turbance of the peacé) suffered a Wagnerian setback when neighbor Trudi Bedway, 25, another third floor tenant, said she is so fasci- nated by the way Miss Scott sings that she, Trudi, gets irtio her closet the better to hear it. Magistrate Paul Balsam, a day- 4 worker himself, dismissed the com- x plaint of Mrs. Gibson and told her: .; “You should be glad to hear this “performance free. Some day you "may be paying a lot of money to hear her sing.” Miss Scott, who says her war- bling lulls to sleep her three-year- old daughter, Debra, added she already has appeared in several Broadway musicals. She said her husband, Norman Duberstein, also is soothed by it, but there was no mention of it putting him to sleep. The judge’s pronunciamert is sad news for people like Mrs. Gibson and me, But Mrs, Gibson shouldn’t feel too badly. I live in Manhattan across the street from Carnegie Hall—you know, where the best | ( tunes come from. Carnegie Hall is quite soundproof from the outside, but singers — there are droves of ’em—live in my apartment house. And brother, they can really sing. When I’m not engrossed in getting some shut-eye, their voices are indeed glorious to hear, But when I’m bedded down, those high notes pierce like a stab in the back. It’s then I mumble “murder on the high C’s,” Can you blame me if I like pillows under my head, not on top # it, especially on a hot, hemid y? By the way, Mrs. Gibson says her husband, Thomas, is a vio- linist. : Mrs. Gibson, your husband has @ potential weapon which, scraped with careless abandon, can stop curry any singer in her sound track, day | Whiten or night. Are you listening, Mrs, Gibson? Treatmnet Helps Shrink Cancer Tn Infant Boy PHILADELPHIA (® — A cancer in a six-months-old Salisbury, Md, boy has shrunk to about half its original size under treatments made possible by developments of atomic science,. Doctors report’ he is making progress. Two weeks ago blindness, and eventual death, seemed imminent. Today Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hick- man have renewed hope their ba- by son Ulysses will live. The parents made a choice two weeks ago. They told doctors at Lankenau Hospital here to go ahead with radiation treatments from the cobalt “bomb.” The only alternative was removal of both eyes. Cancer already had de- stroyed one eye and was attack- ing the other. Valuable Angus Full Is Dead OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. The black angus bull valued at $50,000, which spent several days in an oxygen tent to combat an attack of pneumonia, is dead. The bull, known as Anonian 3263, was taken out of the oxygen tent Thursday, apparently on the road to recovery. But later Mrs. Ivor Balding, wife of the manager of the CV. Whitney Farm, said the bull died of a heart attack, BEAUTIFUL CORAL HOTEL EFFICIENCY aApTs, Summer rates, $18.50 up, excel- lent for 2 or 3 people. Cool and et, Maid_ service. Cope ‘ost Office.
