CONWAY EVANSTON, ‘Ill. w—Christian leaders today turned to a discus- sion of their great, centuries-old, task — carrying the Gospel to millions of non- Christians. - Delegates to the Assembly of the World Council of Churches gath- ered to hear a report by the Com- mittee on Evangelism. Drafters of e report have heard many suggestions for in- creasing the number of Christians, who still are 4 minority in the world as a whole. Among the ideas placed before them were the: ‘ Messages and methods should be more to workers, particu- larly in Asia and other areas where the Communists are trying to recruit them. Laymen, including writers. of widely circulated copy, should play 1a larger part in spreading the faith. Effective use should be made. of the media of mass communication “ — movies, radio, television, news- papers, magazines, books — ih this era of competition for access to | the minds of men. The delegaces realize Christian @vangelists face a challenging fl task. They have been told that, despite their gains, the earth’s to- tal population is growing faster than the Christian population. Evangelism is one of the sub- themes of the meeting of repre- sentatives of 1: denominations from 48 countries. The main theme is “Christ—the Hope of the World.” A 5i-page report on that subject was presented to the delegates Wednesday by a coordinating com- mittee headed by Lutheran Bishop Hanns Lilje of Hanover, Gerniany. It was accompanied by a state- ment from the committee. Debate, revolving principally about the statement, continued through the Wednesday night session without a decision. A revised statement — subject to further revision — was sched- uled to be placed before the dele- gates late today.
