F There is a lesson in the experi- ences of the ancient prophet that has a strange and moving parallel in the lives of many today. We see our victories turned in to seeming defeat by actions of others and by our own weakness. Review Continues At the evening worship hour the continuing review of “The Pil- grim’s Progress” will be given. To- morrow night sees Christian con- tinuing his journey to Mt. Zion. He comes to the Plain called “Ease,” and confronting - a hill called “Lucre Hill.” Here Christ- ian meets one of the most human temptations to befall him on his journey. Paul Touchton, has an- nounced that he will continue on Sunday morning his series of ser- mons on Victorious Living. Mr. Touchton’s topic will be “Victor- ious Living Through Prayer.” Prayer is rather a common ex- perience of life. For sooner or la- ter all people feel the need of cry- ing out to some personality bigger than they are. One of the chief difficulties that we face is that too much of our praying, like too much of the rest of life, is done from selfish desires, We can afford to look long and carefully at the teachings of Jesus on the matter of prayer. The pray- er commonly called the Lord’s Prayer has been used so often that we too easily forget its full mean- ing and importance. Evening Service At the evening service, the pas- tor will speak on the topic “Spiri- tual Versus Physical.” Too often we have thought that there was real conflict between these two phases of life. Both are good and both are of God. Everyone has more or less control over a portion of the physical world. When that control is resurrendered to God, peace and happiness come within. At the morning service, the Choir will sing “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” by Shelley. “I Was Glad” by Waghorne will be the evening anthem. Mr. Willis Walker is director of the choir. Mrs. Ruie Roberts is organist, The worth of a state, in the long tun, is the worth of the individuals composing it. —John Stuart Mill. ‘Knocked Down Religion’ Is Rogers’ Topic | “Knocked down Religion” will be the sermon topic Sunday morning at the 8:45 early worship service at the Islander Drive-in Theatre on Stock Island. The ‘hot-rodder’ likes to strip his car to the bare necessities for show and speed. He then becomes too often a nuisance and a menace to society. The modern automobile is built for comfort, convenience and utility. It gets you there and gets you back — ‘generally. But the stripped automobile, like ‘knocked down religion’ is more for noise and show. This was so evident that one of the minor prophets was moved to ask, “Will a man rob God?” During this service families may attend and enjoy the service in the comfort of their own éar. With the children of the family, they can participate in the service with- out the trouble of finding a baby- ‘sitter or worrying abut the chil- dren bothering other. worshippers. The Church of the Rock invites you to worship with them. Service at Chapel The eleven o’clock ‘service will be held at the Chapel, 535 Francis Street. The sermon topic at this service will be, “The High Cost of Christianity.” ' In this day of bargain hunting the tendency is to get all we can for as little as possible. Naturally we generally get what we pay for. That is especially true with reli- gion and there can be no bargain- ing with Christianity. Sapphira and Ananias tried it. Any others who have tried it have been doomed to death. The early disciples were asked to give up their lucrative business, families — all for Christ and they confessed, “we have for- saken all.” (Matthew 19:27) Such self-denial assures one of eternal life. : . The Sunday School at the Church of the Rock, 535 Francis Street will begin at ten o’clock. An excellent staff of teachers.are always pre- sent to welcome new scholars. Those without a church school are invited to visit this school. Individuality is everywhere to be spared and respected as the root of everything good. —Jean Paul Richter.
