Pridey, March 26, 1954 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Top-Secret Plans For Defense Against Enemy Atomic Attacks Outlined In Closed Sessions By EDWIN B. HAAKINSON WASHINGTON — Informed senators said today that rapid mass evacuation of cities and im- proved aircraft killer missiles are key points in supersecret plans for defense against possible enemy atomic attacks. Chairman Saltonstall (R-Mass) called members of the Senate Armed Services Committee back into closed-door session today for any questions about the latest Plans for continental defense. With extreme caution, he an- nounced that top-secret details of the defenses had been outlined yesterday at a lengthy closed ses- sion by Robert C. Sprague, North Adams, Mass., engineer and elec- tronics manufacturer. Saltonstall said Sprague had full cooperation of all top defense, intelligence and atomic agencies in making his independent survey for defenses against “the growing menace . . . because of Soviet developments in the nuclear and thermonuclear (hydrogen) fields.” His public statement said the senators got a picture of an “‘effec- tive” defense which, however, could not guarantee “complete protection.” Other senators who listened to Sprague said rapid evacuation of urban and industrial populations was one of the protective measures advanced. Another, they said, was expan- sion of the Nike installations now ringing 10 locations to about 30 or 35. Nikes are high-speed guided missiles designed to search out and destroy enemy aircraft. Locations for Nike emplacements made public through approval of sites by congressional committees include Seattle, Pittsburgh, Pphila- delphia, Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Norfolk, Va., and Ft. Meade, Md., to pro- tect both Washington and Balti- more. Launched from a platform and able to travel 1,500 miles an hour— far faster than sound—the missiles are controlled by automatic elec- tronic devices to seek out their targets. Success of their operation as well as any mass evacuation rests upon Come in and GET ACQUAINTED! SHERWIN-WILLIAMS brings you the new WIM A VALUABLE PAINT PRIZE! The temptation was too much. He bit it. The lion took a swipe at Angelo and ripped his shoulder. On the way to a first aid station Angelo stopped for three double cognacs “to replace the loss 0° blood.” At the station, after he was ban- daged up, Angelo asked: “Now who’s going to pay for my torn jacket?” In the ensuing debate con- siderable damage was done to the premises. It took four cops to sub- due Angelo. The judge sentenced him today to spend four months in jail. But, apparently awed by a man who will bite a lion’s tail, he suspended the sentence.
