ITS PROFITABLE Clio Shakes Off Economic Hangover By REX THOMAS CLIO, Ala. (—Clio shook off the worst of its economic hangover to- day with curiously mixed feelings of anger and sympathy toward the money handler whose recent dis- appearance disclosed a $75,000 shortage in depositors’ funds. Some of the townspeople who at first were shocked and bitter at Royall Reynolds adopted a new attitude of forgiveness after he re- turned home and offered to sell everything he owns to help make up the deficit. With the money Reynolds hopes to raise, and the financial sacri- fices of his almost blind father and other kinsmen, a spokesman said yesterday that the nearly 200 other depositors in the now-defunct Clio Merchants Exchange probably will get back 85 to 90 cents on the dolar. A mass meeting has been called for 7:30 tonight to see whether depositors will agree to take a 10 or 15 per cent cut. The family spokesman, J. S. Jackson Sr., estimated that with the help of relatives, Reynolds should be able. to raise all but about $9,000 of the $164,000 on de- posit in the privately operated Merchants Exchange. Depositors outside the family will get the biggest pro rata share, Jackson said. Relatives who had money in the exchange, including ‘an aunt, Mrs, Vela Mae Reynolds, will take @ smaller proportionate share. Meanwhile, townspeople in this southeast Alabama peanut and cotton farming community of 900 Population voiced their reaction with only one restraint — they|r wouldn’t be quoted by name. Only Jackson would talk on the record. “Royall came back voluntarily and is doing everything he can to see that these people get their money back,” the well-to-do land- holder and County Board of Reve- nue member argued. “He’s stripped himself of every- thing he has—his home, his car and even his wife’s car and his government bonds and what he ean borrow on his life insurance, What More can a man do?” A merchant nearby echoed that feeling in these words: “We feel sort of like if a fellow comes back and humbles himself It’s Air-Cooled!
