Sports Roundup | ~~——]_—S==SSSSSSS== TAMPA (®#—They say down here that you can have all these high- salaried, masterminding basekall managers presently whipping their big league squads into shape — they’ll take their own Pepper Mar. tin. In case you've lost track of him, the one and only wild hoss of the Osage has been for some years, if not the best, then by a long shot the most colorful pilot in the Flori- da International League. He: won the flag at Fort Lauderdale last season and will do his heavy think- ing for Miami Beach in the com- ing race. The most rugged member of the famous St. Louis Cardinals Gas House Gang of the early 1930s has just turned 50, and from all ac- counts he hasn’t changed much. He still takes batting practice with his men and likes to entertain the kids in the bleachers by standing flatfooted and jumping up to the fifth row vf seats. The man who, by unanimous con- sent of his opponents and team- mates, was the roughest competi- tor since Ty Cobb’s day wouldn’t think of making the long road trips in the team bus.. He drives his own truck, which is loaded with fishing tackle so he can stop as the spirit moves him and reel in a few. He also keeps a cot in his clubhouse so that after night games he can get in some hasty sieep and start fishing at daylight. He is the only manager in the league who insists upon having a coach. The coach doubles between directing traffic on the bases and |driving the bus though Martin | consents occasionally to help super- vise the base running. They say that this comparative | freedom is especially gratifying to | Pepper when his team visits this cigar-making center. His admirers always present him with a fist- | full of their biggest and finest prod- uct, and he is enabled to retire to the stands and enjoy his gifts before they grow stale. He never smokes on the actual playing field. Those who played with Martin at the height of his fabulous ca- reer, when he was running catch- |ers crazy with his wild dashes j and belly slides and playing third base mainly with his rocklike chest take an especial delight in his managerial success. One gathers they did not quite feel that his particular genius lay in the direct- ing end. Charley Conch’s Selections The expert (Max Carey) and the Professor (Ed Denslow) were argu- ing the respective merits of Range Twilight and Irene Hill during last night’s Greyhound Experts pro- gram on station WKWF. Carey was strong on Irene Hill and Denslow was equally vehe- ment in his claim that Range Twi- light was going to win last night’s feature race. The Expert talked the loudest and the longest — and the result was that he talked Irene Hill right into a victory and a 62 buck Quiniela. It’s a barrel of fun listening to those two jokers Monday, Wednes- day and Friday evenings at 7:15 p. m. Informative, too.
