The man in the White House says that is his basic hope. He won: a. military victory in Europe. But he found a military victory was not enough, It rarely hbas.been in this old world. : It was on this date in 1945. that Eisenhower, . then. supreme com- mander of the Allied forces in Eu- Rope, “accepted Germany's uncon- ditional surrender. He said in a victory order of the day:<The crusade.on which we embarked in the early summer of 1944 'has. reached its glorious con- clusion ,. . Full victory in Europe has’ been attained a And so it* seemed. - Millions laughed: and wept and celebrated around the world with prayers of thanksgiving. Troops. who had come to know war way of life looked eagerly toward home, unce they could comprehend the fight- ing actually was. ended. Oddly enough, while there were victory celebrations in Paris Tondon and New York and San Francisco and hundreds of towns and cities around the world—theré was a strange quiet. among the; fighting men. There is fear that hile the Reds talk of peace, they. move behind their words to con- quer Southeast Asia, and move no nearer to acceptance of a fool- proof system of inspection for dis- armament.
