C. Papy, it was learned today. The~ bill would sell to private developers a 33 mile strip between Biscayne Bay and Key Largo, partly submerged. It would run from Key Largo to Sands Key, old Rhodes Key and Elliott Key on the outside up to Biscayne Key. Thomas H. Horobin of Miami, it was said, offered $100,000 to. the {nternal Improvement, Board of the State for the 33 mile strip which is largely submerged bay bottom. The AP says that not only is Horobin involved: in the proposed sale but Joseph A. Kelleher, Home- stead realtor, who has been an ‘active bidder in state land sales. On Sands Key, Elliott Key, old Rhodes Key and unnamed keys in the area, the strip would narrow to 200 feet from the 2,000 foot width across the shallows and channels. 1 The AP ‘also says that at the Monroe County line the strip to be sold. would follow. the line of bars and keys to Key: Largo, where it would narrow again to 200 feet MODELS NOW ON DISPLAY Drop in and see the world’s finest Wash- ing Machine with the water saver so important here. Wiliams of Sem- inole and Sweeny of Volusia offered Of New-Style BY JAXON There’s a new super market opening on the site of the old Baer’s plan in merchandising to the peo- ple of Key West. Otto Shiver has been operating a super market under this plan for a whole year in Miami and his success is plain- ly visible in the opening of the Shiver Market here. This is a store designed to save the customer money and the chore of comparative shopping. It is not a@ co-op, and the shopper does not | share in the profits as such, how- ever the profits of the store to the corporation only amount to a small 10 per cent gross. ; ah I was conducted through this sparkling new store last week by Otto Shiver, who explained every thing to me in detail. The tour took me down spacious aisles piled high with all the nationally known name brands of canned foods. The big frozen food cases were full, as were the packaged meat bins. In the big iceboxes and cutting Tooms were whole carcasses of beef, lamb, veal and pork. All were stamped “U. S. Good” which Mr. Shiver claims is the best graded meat for the money. First I will tell you how the cost plan works, and then explain how they arrive at the meat prices also. The prices on the merchandise, prominently displayed is the act- ual price that Mr. Shiver has paid for each item. A quick bit of arithmetic on your part will give you the total you must pay. Thus, if a can of soup is ten cents, you know that the cost of the soup to the market was ten cents, and you will pay eleven cents for it, How- ever, each item is not so marked. You will do your shopping, carry it to the checking counter, where it will be added. When the total is arrived at, the clerk will add an/ must be shipped from Bartow, the couty seat, to other municipali- ties. There are not enough ma- chines to go around when munici- pal elections coincide with county elections and mary small commu- ities canot afford to buy the ma- chines, he said. Counties would lose state financi- al aid if they failed to assess prop- erty at full cash value under a bill introduced today by Sen. Rogells, Palmetto. The law long has required as- sessment of:property at full cash value but few counties even claim to approach the 100 per cent figure. There is no machinery to enforce it. Failure of the counties to: assess at full value would be penalized by the cuttig off of all state money allocated for county government purposes. Counties now get millions of dollars a year in state aid for schools, roads, health and other services. A $1 boost in Florida fishing li- censes was asked in a bill intro- duced by Sen. Branch, Tampa. The measure would impose a $1 tax over and above the present licenses cost. A: resident’s license now costs $2 a year. Non-residents pay more. The extra money would be earmarked for water hyacinth control. Another bill, introduced by Sen. Pope, St. Augustine, would permit cane pole fishing in any Florida waters without a license. Cane pole fishermen now are permitted to fish without a licen%e only waters in their home counties. The Senate reversed itself to de- feat, 19-17, a bill which was de- signed to tighten the laws against worthless checks. The bill was adopted Wednesday. an amendment setting the deata | penaltv for anyone convicted twice of selling drugs to children. A mercy recommendation from the jury would reduce the sentence to life imprisonment just as in the case of murder convictions. From ‘this the i Shiver store pays all running ex- | penses of the store, so you see the actual mark-up is very small. Another item of interest is, that if you have any doubts at all about the item you are purchasing, you may ask to see the actual invoice, and see for yourself that the item is priced as marked. The price of meat is computed the same way. The total price of the steer for instance, is computed in price per pound after all bone and waste is cut away. The whole carcasses are re- ceived every day, and cut by a butcher on the spot. Steaks, chops, Toasts, and other cuts are sold at the counter. i Ads running in these papers are regular prices printed to help you make your -shopping lists, Shivers does not have sales, These prices are good from day to day and week to week.
