It was a ‘egitimate question but one which might have brought ~ an explosive answer. public assurance that all mony between them, been a lot of speculation in what McCarthy is aiming to do. It was a question he would not answer without a bit more prepar- ation on it because he just hasn’t thought about McCarthy’s parti¢u- lar function, what he can do and what would happen if he didn’t do it. So, Eisenhower said, it is a Eisenhower trouble to try to have good rela- tions with his fellow-Republicans in Congress. In the campaign he : his endorsement to McCar- thy. So, unless he was ready to break with McCarthy after only a month in office, the news conference was hardly the time or place to an- nounce the break. Such a split, if it comes, would be of the deepest significance for Eisenhower and his future relations with Congress. It would affect the future of his whole administration. ‘So if he ever decides to be critical of McCarthy and .other ind he didn’t indi- cate Wednesday that he. had any such n let it be known at a place and time of his own choosing.
