VIDAL, feb3,1958 jan13-2 Sonar School Has ° No Holiday Cases e e e e Needing Discipline Not one disciplinary ease of un- authorized absence was for the over 400 enlisted men who went on leave from Fleet Sonar School during the Christmas holi- days. Captain W. H. Truesdell, the Sonar School's CO, extended a “WELL DONE” to all hands con- cerned. Most of the men took 23 days leave during the suspension of teaching activities at the school, and some went to places as far as California, Colorado, and Texas. Among the sonarmen who took the opportunity to settle their wives in Key West while on Christ- mas leave were Robert S. Shaw, S01; Ralph Fetters, SO1; Rupert Rush, SO1; Kenneth Browning, FT1; Lyle C. Coats, S03; Tony L, Robertson, SO3; Charles Spencer, SN; James Green, SN; Joseph Di- Liberto, SN; Orville Benjamin, SN; and Steven Delaney, SA. Their good conduct severely test- ed, 15 sonarmen became married over the holidays and also re-.” turned on time—certainly the ex- © emplars for Fleet Sonar School leave takers. HOILYWOOD NOTES By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD #—This will be hard to believe in England, where he has long been the top musical star, but Jack Buchanan says he is carving out a new career. Buchanan’s career has already won him fame and fortune in Eng- land, where he has starred on the stage and screen. Now he’s taking a long-postponed whirl at Holly- wood movies, with some TV tossed in for good measure. “There’s an entirely new gener- ation which doesn’t know me,” said the tall, graceful musical star. “I'm designing my new career to suit them.” A previous generation remem- bers Buchanan from the 1920s, when he appeared on Broadway with Gertrude Lawrence and Bea- trice Lillie in “Charlot’s Revue.” He remained in England during the war, entertaining troops and oper- ating his theater, the Garrick, through the worst German bomb- ings. After the war, he was tied up Owner, ~ -|in England with commitments, *lexcept for a six-week replacement of Frank Fay in “Harvey” during the Broadway run. Having done two British shows in the last three years, Buchanan is now free to pursue his career on this side of the Atlantic. His first assignment was a movie, “Bandwagon,” with his old friend Fred Astaire. Set onlookers predict he'll walk away with the flicker, and producer Arthur Freed wants him to stay here for more films. Buchanan's only other Hollywood " {film was “Monte Carlo” in 1930, “The less said about that, the better,” he said. He hasn’t done a British film musical since before the war. The | English have had scant success with their tunefilms, except for arty efforts like “Red Shoes” and “Tales of Hoffman.” How come? “One reason is the music,” he commented. “I'd say the score is responsible for 60 per cent of a musical’s success. Some British AL CIRCUIT! Composers May get angry with me, ¥ FLORIDA. | but I must say that we just don't produce the scores that American shows do. “For another thing, musicals are costly. They require maintaining a staff of musicians, directors, choreographers, designers and so forth. The English studios can't |afford that.” Buchanan scored a hit on his first big-time TV debut last week. |He co-starred with Bob Hope on jthe “Comedy Hour,” teaming with Hope and Bing Crosby in a musical \at @ London benefit. Buchanan has offers to appear on TV with Jim- jmy Durante and Tallulah Bank- head, bot they may have to wait |for his return from 2 business trip }to England. | The beautiful Taj Mahal, a royal tomb in India, has had trouble | with a leaky roof almost since the {time it was built in the 17th Ceo- jtury, says the National Geo- jgraphic Society. | Lake Superior resches 2 maxi So2001te0t- 0) | mmm 215 depth of about 1,180 feet.
