But the spirit is the same, and pity the poor clerks who are weep- ing and beating their chests. One ththhg I noticed though, everyone seemed in fine humor in spite of crying skies and soupy pavements, So. . .1 went shop hop- ping too. a aed If you’ve beer: past Southern- most Flowers and Gifts recently you've seen some pretty snazzy looking centerpieces all atwinkle with snow and Christmas bells. Also some real mistletoe grow- Ing and real holly too. The sprayed holly wreathes are lovely with their big red bows to decorate a white doorway. Southernmost is ready to wish you a Merry Christmas! In the workshop, Mrs. Keys is busy as anything. A dozen hands wouldn‘t be enough to hion shawls and sweaters you've ask- ed for. But the little shoulderette she’s knitting of fine ribbon and sequins is the prettiest yet, and Mrs, Keys would be glad to show you how to make one. You‘d have a dream of a wrap for a price you'd never dream of. And now to you from the Southernmost Flowers and Gifts + + « that’s Mrs, Van Goidts- moven, and the little Work Shop, that’s Mrs. Key, the Merriest, Happiest, most Blessed Christ- mas ever. Gi Read Me too, and with it a delicious recipe for Christmas rolls for a famished family after al} the gifts are unwrapped. Heat one half cup milk until a film puckers the top, then cool to lukewarm. When luke- warm and not a minute sooner, sprinkle in one package active dry yeast to soften, or one cake of the compressed. Melt 6 table- spoons margarine or butter, and mix with one teaspoon salt and one third cup sugar in a mixing bowl. Add yeast milk mixture and two eggs and beat until well mix- ed. Stir in three and one half cups sifted all purpose flour and mix thoroughly and then dump dough out on a floured board and knead hard for about 10 minutes or until dough is smooth and springy. Re- turn dough to bowl and let rise in a warm place until double in size. Meanwhile mix up a_ fine filling. Grind one cup blanched almonds fine through a food chopper, and melt two tablespoons butter or margarine. Beat one egg and one third cup sugar together until smooth, pour in melted shortening, add almonds, two tablespoons cream, one half cup raisins, and mix well. Then heat six’ table- spoons apricot jam. Roll the dough on a floured board into a rectangle, spread sur- face with jam and almond filling. Cut dough into 2” crosswise strips | and then roll up tightly. Place rolls in baking pan greased and sprinkled with dry bread crumbs leaving one half inch space be- tween each roll. Brush tops with egg yolk mixed with two table- spoons of water and let rise again until double in size. Bake in 400 F. oven for 30 to 35 minutes, and you will have approximately one dozen very delicious rolls. Chairman Hester Stutz, a famous Key ‘West cook, had outdone herself this time, experienced members agreed. Before the proceedings got underway, eggnog and fruit cake were served —___a2 in the dining room, Miss Minnie charming in a black, lace-trimmed taffeta dress dramatized with pur- ple orchid corsage, served, Mrs. Maitland Adams’ amgnifi- cent Santa Claus boot centerpiece dominated the table. After the pro- gram came more eggnog, more superb fruit cake, “secret recipe’ cakes and cookies, and wonderful hamburgers and coffee. The program prepared by the committee featured a “drama,” announced by Mrs. Jennie Appel- routh. The baby, crawling on the floor is gown and bonnet and carrying her own baby’s toys and bottle, was tiny Mrs. Billie Crow- ley. Three older “‘brats” were play- ed by Mrs. Glorence Gordon, Mrs, Alice Nix, and Mrs, Dora Dalton, all in fantastic hair bows and short dresses. Mrs. Carola Nettles as the mother completed the group mak- ing out a Santa Claus list for the harassed father (Joan Mardis), who finally went out and shot shot Santa Claus. However, Josr.’s personality turned out to be schi- zophrenic, for Santa showed up a few minutes and was later un- masked as -- Joan Mardis! The members also enjoyed two songs by a guest, Mrs. Jerry Co- hen, and themselves sang carols to the accompaniment of Mrs. Thel- ma Porch. The committee res- ponsible for this most successful party were Mrs. Stutz, Mrs. Ap- pelrouth, Mrs. Nettles, Mrs. Mar- dis, Miss Harris, and Mrs. Daiton.
