ELLIOT, Trustees LL. no idecl-8-15,1952 Sports Roundup NEW YORK’ W—The basketball season is upon us again, mates, and we have been asked if it is true that the sport is in a bad way from the series of “dumping” scandals and other assorted mal- feasances that have kept it up in the crime news, along with arson and multiple bigamy, during the past few years. “Will people continue to pay to | see it after all this bad publicity?” j we are asked. ‘Don’t you feel that this is the critical season for the game, when it might start sliding back to the status of the very minor sport it was before Ned Irish put on his first program in Madison Square Garden in the early 30s?” We have passed on the questions to a number of men who know a great deal more about basketball than we ever intend to, and their | answer is a vigorous ‘‘no” on each count. They claim the game is much too big, too solidly en- trenched in the country of its birth | and much of the rest of the world to be seriously hurt by its recent misfortunes. The garden has a fine schedule of attractions booked for the win- ter, they point out, even if such former standouts as Kentucky, Long Island U., Bradley, Okla- homa Aggies and CCNY will be missing. They predict confidently that the crowds will average just about as large as in othe. years. “That is only a small part of} the overall picture, though,” one of our experts commented. “Since the Garden made basketball big stuff and showed the ‘kind of mon- ey there was in it, schools all over the country have buili huge, expensive field houses and ad- vanced basketball to a status only just behind that of football. They no longer need to come to the} Garden to make big money. “As for the fans who love bas- | ketball staying away just because |a few boys were caught shaving | points for money, you can forget jit. Did baseball fold up after the | Black Sox scandal? All that did was awaken baseball to the fact , that it had a problem on its hands, | jand this has done the same for | basketball, “The banishment of the Black Sox had its effect upon every base- ball player who has come along! since. It’s hard for a stranger to | | get the time of day from one of | them. From here on it’s going to {no real but the man could pe close to right. .The boys who succumbed to the gamblers originally did not feel, upon their word, that they were doing anything very wrong in merely adjusting the score to fit the point spread. kk wae only later, after they were hooked that some of them actually took to throwing games, The players you will see out there this winter know the facts of life. @y GAYLE TALBOT NEW YORK — The time ap- pears to have come for the Okla- homa Sooners to quit fooling around and make a rea’ pitch for membership in the Southwest Con- ference, where their football play- ing qualities would be more great+ ly appreciated than they are in the Big Seven. Addition of the Sooners would round the Southwest Conference into a powerful eight-school group whose championship race would be even more rugged than it is now. Also, it would guarantee the Oklahoma team the privilege of playing in the Cotton Bow! if it won the title. The simple fact is that there is incentive nowadays to build a great football dynasty un- less there is a chance to play in one of.the bowls, Probably it isn’t even economically sound. That is one of the big talking points of the bowl critics. If yow ever see one-of our in- door track stars limpixg around the strects as though he had some- thing stuck in the toe of his shoe, we are in position to tell you how he got that way. Our authority is Ray Weinberg, who hurdled for Australia in the Olympic Games at Helsinki last summer and who says he tried to indute several American stars to compete in his country this winter. “They were just not interested,” Weinberg told the Melbourne Ar- gus. “Some of them make up to $650 for a single appearance at an indoor meeting. One of them told me there is too much money in the boards for him to visit Aus- tralia.” Apparently under the impression that they were talking with an- other member of the guild, the Americans, according to Weinberg; went to some pains to fill him in on the latest methods of paying off in their country. This was our favorité, as divulged by the Argus: “Weinberg said most of the stars had private dressing rooms when they appeared at the meetings, On returning to change after ap- pearing on the track, they found $650 tucked in the toe of one of their shoes.” What will these slick promoters think up next? Man Who Dueled Police Dies ATLANTA (#—A 50-year-old car- penter who dueled police for an hour last week with a shotgun died of his wounds yesterday, Homer Marvin Sprvell, charged with suspicion of murder, had been under police guard in Grady Hos- pital since the gun battle last Tues- day.
