Pageé THE KEY WEST CITIZ Telegraph Company Survey Aims At Finding Out Amount Of Water In Gulf Stream Army Man Has Completed Course Pvt. Granville Knowles, 1025 Whitehead St., completed his basic training at the Quartermaster Re- placement Training Center, Fort Lee, Virginia, on November 29. Knowles is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Knowles, 324 Virginia St., and the husband of Mrs, Annie L. Knowles who resides at the Whitehead Street address. He was inducted into the Army on September 17 of this year. Be- fore entering service he attended Douglass High School. Following completion of the basic he is to be trained in a specific military occupational specialty, then assigned to a unit in a per- manent position for which he was trained, COST OF CLOTHES FOR CARDINALS CUT VATICAN CITY —Pope Pious XII has ordered dress modifica- tions that will cut an estimated $1,- 000 in the cost of a cardinal’s ward- robe. Hitherto the cost for such a wardrobe--which includes about 40 Pieces of clothing -- has been esti- mated at slightly more than $3,000. The order will ease the finan- cial burden of 24 new cardinals named on Saturday who must meet the cost of their princely garments. Want to give your chile con carne @ real Texas flavor? The findings will help determine the | relation between seasonal varia- | tions in the Florida Current's | strength. They will also add to | existing knowledge »f what makes | the Gulf Stream go and its effect | on the world’s weather. | The scientific survey of the | Gulf Stream’s current, sponsored | by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, is being carried out at Key West, Fla. by Guntner K. Wertheim, an experimental physi- cist from Harvard University. Wes- | tern Union’s International Commu- nications Department is cooperat- | ing in the study by offering the use of one of its Key West-Havana cables which lies directly across the course of the Gulf Stream. These studies do not interfere with the transmission of regular traffic over the cable. Scientists have determined that earth’s magnetic field produces electrical energy. This energy can be measured and recorded on ar automatic voltage indicator by placing an electrode on the end of each cable. The flow of water is proportional to the variations | in voltage, allowing for such natural phenomena as earth cur- | rents and sun spots. | The volume of water that the | Gulf Stream pours hourly into the sea is more than 1,000 times the average discharge of the Missis- sippi River which drains 40 per cent of the United States and pours 660,000 cubic feet of water each second into the Gulf of Mex- ico. At present it is estimated that about 10,000,000,000 gallons of water now flow every second between Key West and Havana. Daily 24-hour records are now being kept for the Institute on the movement of the Gulf Stream, with the assistance of P. J. Morre, in charge of cable operations for Western Union at Key West. The project, started in August, will continue for one year. The find- ings will then be made available to scientists all over the world. The first notice on record of the Gulf Stream’s existence was made in 1513 by Ponce de Leon when he | sailed around Cuba. However, ac- | |curate measurements of the Gulf Stream were begun by the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey about 60 years ago.
