| Change From Man To Woman — Made By Pretty Young Dane COPENHAGEN, Denmark # — Lying in a hospital bed with her Jong yellow hair curling on a pil- low, 26-year-old Christine Jorgen- sen widened her large, grey-blue eyes and lifted her hands in a sur- prised, frightened gesture here as she learned that the news of her change from a man to a woman was on front pages throughout the world. i “I feared it all the time,” the pretty young girl said, but she smiled happily as she expressed gratitude to the Danish doctors who with operations and treatment changed the sex of the former George Jorgensen Jr., A:my veter- an and son of a Bronx carpenter. “I’m happy to have become a woman and I think many more people who are unhappy as I was before should follow my example,” Christine told a woman reporter ‘who stole into her room at Rigs Hospitalet, the Danish state hospi- tal here. The doctors, meanwhile, had put a wall of secrecy around their patient, whose change of sex has ‘only a few precedents in medical history. Miss Jorgensen said she expects to be discharged from the hospital goon and plans to return to the United States after she completes training here as a color photo- grapher. Dr. Christian Hamburger, Danish hormone expert who directec. the countless injections his patient re- ceived along with surgical opera- tions by several leading Danish surgeons, refused to describe Miss Jorgensen’s treatment in detail. He confirmed, however, that her treatment and her change from man to woman would be completed soon and that she would leave the hospital then. The boy-to-girl transformation was revealed in New York Sun. night in a copyrighted article by the New York Daily News, which said Christine in a letter to her father said the process had taken two years. During a trip to California, the youth met a doctor who told him of sex conversion work being cone in Denmark and three years ago he went there, ostensibly to study color photography, and put himself in the hands of Dr. Hamburger, the News said. The News said Jorgensen wrote home: “Nature made the mistake which I have had corrected and now I am your daughter,” She enclosed Pictures of herself in gifls’ clothes a pretty, very feminine-looking Miss Jorgensen said that she had never served in the U. S. Army asa regular soldier. As George Jorgensen she had been called up, though, but only for a few months and spent most of the time as a clerk in an Army office, she said. Dr. Hamburger said that he did not know of any precedent to Miss Jorgensen’s treatment in Danish medical history. The closest par- allel, he said, was the sexual con- version of a Danish artist who be- fore the war was changed into a woman and took the name of Lily Faby Says Height Is Drawback To His Career By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD # — You’d think that a towering young man with acting ability, 2 handsome face and blonde hair would be a cinch for film success. “It’s not as easy as all that,” comments Jim Arness, who has all those qualifications. There’s one difficulty: He towers too tall for most Hollywood leading men. “Jim, a good-looking boy from Minneapolis, is a shade over 6 feet 6. He’s considerably taller than most leading men, and two inches taller than the biggest one (Dan Dailey). “It wouldn’t be bad if I played leads myself,” he explained. ‘‘Then it wouldn’t matter how tall I was. But a lot of leading men don't like to have actors taller than them appear in their pictures. I don’t blame them. If I were a star, I’d probably object to having someone seven feet tall in one of my pictures.” Jim’s careef is finally hitting on all cylinders after some lean days. He decided to take a flier at acting after he got out of the Army (he slumped down during his Army physical so he wouldn't be re- jected for over-height). After ap- pearing in a little theater here, he landed a movie job as one of Loretta Young’s brothers in “The Farmer’s Daughter.” “They wanted a guy who looked like a big Swede,” Jim recalled. “So I had no trouble getting cast. But when I tried to get an acting job after that, I realized what I was up against. The studios told me I was too big to appear with their male stars. “I had interviews again and again for Alan Ladd pictures. But I was always turned down for the same reason. But then I realized that Ladd probably had just as much trouble getting a break in pictures—because he was shorter than most leading men.” Jim had some lean days during which he sold anything from news- paper advertising to plywood. Then Dore Schary, who had hired him for “The Farmer’s Daughter,” gave him a job in “Battleground.” He followed that by playing the title role in ‘The Thing.” Sharks and barracuda, which are often dangerous when found in the open ocean, seldom attack when they are fed regularly in captivity. Patty, the blonde sister, is the bride of Walter Weschler, pianist for the act. Max- ene, the brunette, is divorced—her former husband didn’t fit into the act. Having lunch with the Andrews | sisters and husbands is an exper- fence. The girls arrive breathlessly, laughing, full of apologies for being late, trailed by husbands picking up fur coats and compacts and signaling headwaiters. To avoid confusion each sister wears her name in diamonds and tubies, pinned to her chest. Laughs Patty: “Sometimes I feel even our hus- bands might get us mixed up if we didn’t carry identification. Not that we look alike (they don’t) but actually we do often sound alike, act alike and rush around alike. “We're likely to make the same mistakes too, such as forgetting schedules and leaving things in hotel rooms. Husbands are awfully comforting at times like this.” At this point Lou excuses him- self, explaining: “ve got to go buy a strap for Maxene’s suitcase. We're leaving this and she broke the lock.” “You see what I mean,” says Patty. Both current husbands say that wooing an Andrews sister is some- thing to try the courage of the strongest man. Walter explains: “You have to pass muster with all three of them before you even have a chance to hold hards with the one you want. It’s sort of like standing trial before a three-judge court.” Laverne, Maxene and Patty have been crooning their syncopated ditties in night clubs, radio and movies for quite a few years since they left high school in Minneapo- lis to go on the road with a vaude- ville act. Today they probably are the country’s best-known sister act, and despite the hazards of clashing temperaments, split-second sched- ules and the general hysteria of show business, they still like each other. Says Maxene: “Oh, we blow up at each other now and then, but that only clears the air. Each of us would fight anybody who made a dirty crack about either of the others.’ FOOTPRINT STOLEN BY OHIO VANDALS CHARDON, 0. #—Historic Prin- cess Rock was without its footprint here. Someone chisled it out. The legend is that hundreds of years ago an Indian princess left the footprint when she leaped to her death in a rocky ravine to es- cape a pursuing brave. The 100-ton rock which bore the footprint is in a 4-H Club camp in Ashtabula County. The vandal cut out a slab two feet square and three inches thick to get the footprint. This time it is the nightly entertainment that is~being exhibited at the Preview Lounge. They have a split bill that is almost perfect in its balance. On one enc you find Jackson and Tay- lor, and the other is occupied by the Jestones. The former is a male and fe- male duo and the latter is a pair of male jesters. They compliment each other very well in so much as the stuff they do is almost exactly opposite, and it is all music and fun. It is nice to know something about the entertainers you are going to hear and see, so for a little background, lend ear. Morry was im- prisoned when he was about 14° years old and was finally released at 20. Naturally he is a trifle reticent about -his experiences, but these facts were divulged: All the rest of his family were wiped out. All were cremated ex- cept Morry and his mother. Then one day they forced him to stand and watch while his mother was shot. He himself was scheduled to be executed, but a guaré had been taken with Morry’s harmonica play ing and was able to save his life. After all of this he was liberated in 1945 by the Americans, and bereft of all but his talent and his irrepressible spirit, he began to make his way alone.
