Silkworm Priday, Nevember 28,1952 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Page 9 KEY WEST CITIZEN Lees | Twenty-Fifth Birthday For Mickey Mouse By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD — It’s hard to believe, but the mighty Mickey Mouse will reach his quarter-cen- tury mark next year. Back in 1928, the show world witnessed the opening of a minia- ture epic called “Steamboat Wil- lie.” The star was ar. eager little fellow named Mickey Mouse. Few realized that this mouse would la- bor and bring forth a mugimil- lion-dollar industry. Then as now, Mickey’s guide, friend anc voice was Walt Disney. The film wizard has a myriad of projects to help celebrate his brainchild'’s 25th annivers: of these is titled “Micke; day Party.” It will be a 45-minute film in which the celebrated rodent will review some of his past hits. There are many other impres- sive items on the Disney agenda, Walt himself seemed a little over- whelmed by them as we chatted over lunch. “We’re working on pictures that won't be released until 1956,” he remarked. “It amazes even me sometimes. Right now I’d just like to take a long vacation. But I can’t do it. I've got 700 or 800 people working for me. I can't ever shut down.” Despite his protests about the work, he showed his obvious de- ligt in his projects as he talked about them. One of his favorite subjects is the true life adventure series, which has depicted the lives of the seals, beavers, elk and other wild life. “We were just feeling our way along at first,” he admitted. “But now we've hit our stride and we know how to film them and put them together. I plan to put some of them out at feature length. The first will be ‘The Living Desert,’ a picture about the great Ameri- can desert. “There are no limits to the sub- jects we can find in nature, long as we do not limit our imag- inatién in dealing with them.” The Disney program shapes up tentatively like this: 1953—‘‘Peter Pan,” all-cartoon feature “Bear Country,” a true life short feature ‘Mickey's Birth- day Party” “The Living Desert”; “Ben and Me,” the longest (20 minutes) short cartoon Disney has made—a $300,000 gamble; “The Sword and the Rose,” live film made in England. 1954—‘‘The Prairie Story,” a feature-length study of the Ameri- can prairie; “The Lady and the Tramp,” cartoon feature; “Rob Roy,” another English-made live actioner. 1955—"‘Sleeping Beaut: toon feature; “20,000 Le: der the Sea,” the Jules venture yarn. 1956—“‘Hiawatha,” ture. ‘erne ad- cartoon fea- When Tennessee defeated Ala- bama 27-13 last year in Birming- ham, it was the first defeat for the | Crimson Tide on Legion Field since 1940.
