The 80 operators employed at the Southern Bell company on the man- ual switchboard, will be replaced by the impersonal dial tone. That Personal contact with the telephone felt by all users, sometimes plea- sant, sometimes frustrated when the voice fails to sound, will be just another memory come December 6, midnight. The female voice, will emanate when a user dials information. A voice, not a mechanical hum will also help out users who afe trying to get disconnected numbers, chang ed numbers, and other hard-to-get connections. These voices will be of girls called by the company “‘in- terceptors’’. e The full-time regular operators who have worked with the company will all be reassigned to other jobs, if they wish, Chet Cold manager said today, , There are probably lots of Key Westers, however, who will miss the friendly voice of a telephone girl when they pick up their receiv- er, and instead hear one more sign of this mechanical age. The advantages of modern effici- ency will be offset by the loss of the warmth of personal contact, but that is the price of progress, according to company executives.
