Steveson. Smathers says political platforms have “become meaningless” and are designed only to? influence! votes. I agree with hint. But, as they are meaningless, why is he squawking about some planks in the Democratic platform? A man does not have to be a sound rea- soner to be unaffected by anything that is meaningless, Any man, with but a modicum of reasoning power, Ppoohpoohs meaningless things. Does Smathers believe we should have a court that is given power by our Constitution to make final de- cisions on public questions? As a lawyer, Smathers answer is “‘Yes”’; as a politician, his answer is ‘‘No.” The United States Supreme Court has decided that tidelands belong to the government, that is, to ALL the people of the United States. Stevenson abides by that decision; Smathers is fuming against it. Smathers favors the senate fili- buster. What is a filibuster? It is a talkfest by a disgruntled minori- ty that stops a majority from vot- ing on a proposed law, Stevenson believes in that pivotal factor in our democracy -- majority rule; Smathers in an unshakable adher- ent of the filibxuster ~- minority rule, Smathers is against the FEPC; Stevenson believes in that Biblical injunction, “A laborer is worthy toil, regardless of the color of his skin. Smathers says, “The only party that requires 100 percent loyalty is the communist party.” That is quibbling, shuffling away from the fact, stemming from Smathers’ at- titude, that is plain to every fair- minded person. Ey fought this evil. They got remarks just like those which are being said about them at present. How- ever, they did not cease to fight these evils. Where were the would-be good thinking and good moral people of Key West at that time? They cer- tainly were not at the City Hall. However, the other side was there. It is not only the ministers’ duty to try to keep our city clean, but it is the duty of every one who wants it so to fight to keep Key West clean, You should protest evil to our officials and visit the meetings of both the City Board of Commissioners and the County Board of Commissioners and pro- test the evils which are being prac- ticed. That is your duty and mine; as well as the ministers, “It has also been mentioned in the People’s Forum about $76.26 being given to some poor famiiy. Well, in my opinion, it is far better to-first stop vice and keep our children and young people out of the jaws of hell, then help the needy. The ministers are here to raise the standards of living and these good men are fighting so that your children and mine will be reared in a good wholesome com- munity. If we would study our Bibles and think of our God-given jewels — our children — and bring them to Sunday School, church and to the recreation the church offers, it would be far better than carry- ing them to places of the devil’s amusement. Remember, God is still on His throne and some day we are all going to answer for the way we are now living. I know there are many, who claim to be Christian, who are helping the cause of evil and are [using the tithe, which is God’s, to further evil. The Bible states that whatsoever we sow — so shall we also reap. Therefore, it pays us to be careful as to what we say to and about our Lord’s’ ministers, I hope, trust and pray that every- one of us will realize that we don’t need dog tracks. We need men and women to be mindful that God our Father made us and that some- What would Smathers have thought, during his 1950 campaign for the senate, had somebody said to him, ‘‘See here, George, I'll in- troduce you only on the condition I’m permitted to tell the audience I don’t agree with you on such-and- such questions’? That condition would have been discourteous to Smathets. Does he not think it would be discourteous to lay down that condition even to a candidate for the lowest office in the land? Does he not think it is disgustingly di§courteous to lay down that condition to a candidate for the highest office in the land? What Smathers said about the ed brush-off. It’s not a question of loyalty; it’s a question of courtesy and respect, SAM E.
