The head of | |the CIA made his statement in a | | legal proceeding in Washington. | Eisenhower at first was reported }to be injecting the question of Communist penetration of the in- | telligence agency into a speech for a Midwestern campaign tour start- ing today. But later a spokesman on thé general’s campaign train said Ei- senhower would do nothing to en- danger che security of this country or the CIA, although he intends | to keep on hitting subversives in | government. And a spokesman for the Re- publican National Committee said in Washington that neither the committee nor Eisenhower intends to make a ‘“‘political football” of | the Smith statements. Smith backed down a bit from his original statement. He got out another to the effect that what he really meant to say was that any inelligence agency must be on constant guard and would be ‘“‘crim-| inally negligent’”’ if it did not oper- ate on the assumption that Reds have been able to make a pene- tration. The general told reporters the CIA never should become involved in a political campaign and that he had sent his second statement to president Truman and to can- didates Eisenhower and Stevenson Stevenson seized last night on smith’s statement No. 2 and said | that to exploit the original one “for partisan purposes is the kind of political opportunism which will never catch Communists.” “A highly professional, non- political intelligence agency is in- dispensable to the government, whether a Republican or Democrat is president,” Stevenson said in a | formal statement of his own. “It | must never become a_ political | football.”” | The Democratic nominee noted, | | furthermore, that Smith was Eisen- hower’s chief of staff during the | | war and “a man in whom Gen | Eisenhower has expressed implicit | | confidence.” He said, too, that | Smith’s deputy is Allen Dulles, a prominent Republican and brother ‘of John Foster Dulles, Eisenhower } foreign affairs adviser. The first complete revision of the King James Version of the Bible in 51 years was published. Thirty-two scholars have worked on it for 15 years. A new Roman Catholic transla- tion of the first eight books of the Old Testament, also coming out yesterday, is the 10-year work of 40 scholars, The Library of Congress cele- brated the 500th anniversary of the first book printed from movable metal type, the Gutenberg Bible, | with a special ceremony and an exhibit of rare Bibles, And the Postoffice issued special Gutenberg stamp. No other book has come close to approaching the popularity of the Bible. Many an author would feel he | had hit the big time if his book sold 25,000 copies. It has been esti- | mated that a billion Bibles have been sold, Yet diminished. The new revised ed tion had an advance sale of a mil-| lion copies. With its hold on Western civili- zation, it isn’t surprising that the first book printed was the Bible. But it may surprise you to learn | that this first book also was a top- flight printing job. Johann Gutenberg and his asso- ciates turned out 200 Bibles. Forty- six of these still are in existence. The famed Gutenberg Bixble be. longing to the library is printed on vellum, a fine variety of animal skin. The text is Latin, following St. Jerome’s fourth-century ver- sion. The headings are red, mak- ing it the first color print job of j all time. For nearly five centuries the Benedictine monks owned this book. They took such care of it —and it was so well made in the first place—that after all these years it still looks fresh. Frederick R. Goff, chief of the Rare Books Division of the library, says of the book “It achieved standards we've never surpassed, and rarely have equaled.” 1,000 SUSPECTS ARE ROUNDED UP SAN SALVADOR, El ®—A roundup of su d sup porters of last week's abortive Communist revolutionary plot has netted more than 1,000 persons, in formed sources said here.
