Coumunity Auditorium ane L 2 a“ 4 5 ‘ONLY THE BEAT OF A HEART BETWEEN NIXON AND THE PRESIDENCY’ greatest of all Republicans, said that Lincoln, the when a man feels he is unable to win by argument he re- sorts to abuse. Nixon, while he was trying to explain away that $18,000 subsidy, launched into a hysterical at- tack, steeped in abuse, against Democrats, particularly Truman and Stevenson, But first, let us consider the “explanation” about re- ceiving and spending, the $18,000. Eisenhower head- quarters retained lawyers to examine Nixon’s expense ac- count, as paid for by the $18,000, and found it to be okay, correct in every detail, hunky-dory. The expenses were blanketed, whereas they should have been itemized to the final penny. So much for that. Nixon admitted he ‘had bought two houses, one in Washington for $41,000 and one in Cali- fornia for $13,000. He said further he owed $20,000 on the Washington house and $3,000 on the house in Califor- nia. That statement {fs equivalent to saying he had paid $21,000 on the Washington house and $10,000 on the California house, a total of $31,000, but he did not say where he got the money to pay the $81,000. Eisenhower had said he insisted on a complete ac- counting of Nixon’s receipts, “clean as a hound’s tooth.” But instead of getting an explanation about the $31,000, Nixon fell to abusing Truman and Stevenson and praising Eisenhower to!so great an extent, one would have thought he was a saint, glamorized with a halo, “Truman isn’t fit to be President; Stevenson isn’t fit to be President.” Only Eisenhower is “fit” to be President. He alone, will “clean up the sordid mess of corruption in Washington;” he alone will “root the communists out of Washington.” As Nixon eulogized Eisenhower as the “one and only,” it was easy to note that Nixon was pleading to | be kept on the Republican ticket. Gabriel Heatter has the knack of boring into the heart of a subject. Tuesday night, just an hour before Nixon began his appeal, Heatter said: . “Assuming Nixon remains on the Republican ticket; assuming further Eisenhower wins, there will be only the beat of a heart between Nixon and the presidency.” Had Nixon left his abusing political speech and his plea for sympathy out of his statement, he could have made it in 10 minutes, instead of having been abruptly cut off after he had been speaking half an hour. He even told his listeners his wife is of Irish descent. What did Mrs. Nixon’s racial strain have to do with the accounting? What did his political abuse have to do with the accounting? But despite those divergencies, despite the blanketed expenses, despite the $31,000 paid on two houses, Repub- licans generally will acclaim Nixon as having established eonvincingly he ts as “clean as a hound’s tooth.” SLICE OF HAM OTHE COLONEL WANT ST YOU HAVE A N NY MORE AUKOT ONCS. Sua ae Liar’s Club Begins Annual Yarn Spinning By DOROTHY RAYMER most difficult man to see is “Big Rupert,” He’s a president, too, His real name is Rupert Knowles and he is the chief executive of the Key West Liar’s Club. The group meets, or rather straggles in, if they feel like it, at the Horseshoe Bar at 800 Caroline st. There isn’t any horseshoe on the door or above it; the bar si shaped like two sides of a restangle and the only picture of note is not of a horse but a caricature of “Big Rupert.” Maybe the place has its lable because of the horseplay that goes on when story telling time sets in. After three entire days of tele- phoning and stalking the assembly place, “Big Rupert” was finally snared at dusk last night in the huge throne chair which has white letters printed on the backrest “Reserved for Big Rupy.” That takes turns sitting in it. When trapped by the camera, “Blimp” Knowles, alias “Big Ru- pert” was holding court, more like a monarch than a president. er throne, on the slightly sagging circle were his cohorts, discussing re-election of Knowles. Secretary Ketchum observed that, Mr. Knowles failed to be re-elec' ed and that he obviously is still “far out in front” this year. His supporters include such ill- ustrious characters, or let us say, men of character as “Lightfinger”’ Saunders, “Pirate Gay, “Baldy” Higgs, Speaker of the House who is also known as Scabie; ‘‘Pruneface” Cordou, “Wickie” Roberts. The roll call also includes ‘Old Corset”, “‘Chick- en Charlie’, “The Rat’, “The Peace Maker”, ‘Dodo’, pronounc- ed ‘“‘dudu” and the crowning name Bite.” Swearing on their integrity as they have not lost their amateur standing. One spokesman said, “We are a strictly amateur croup. We exclude professionels like politi- cians and officials.” The rules committee is consider- ing changes in the annual lie con- test. The change is due to the wrangling in last year’s whopper “A. P.”’ Inez reports in last year’s contest, Capt. He asked if I had ever seen 20 pound alligator pears (avacadoes to youse). He said they grew that big and there was a picture in a Miami paper to prove it. However, the avacadoes turned out to be papayas on close investigation, “A. P.”’ Inez added that the story was almost thrown out of the contest but that a Mr. M.
