Key West, Florida, has the most equable climate in the country, with an average range of only 14° Fahrenheit VOL. Father John Armfield, who spoke against the The Key West Citisen THE SOUTHERNMOST NEWSPAPER proposed Stock Island dog track with JayCee Chet Cold at the JayCee sponsored rally at Bay- view Park last night. Key Westers, Dog Betting Hits Your Payroll Risking Your Money On Dog Racing Is A Fever That Eats Into Your Wages Or Salaries We have a big Navy payroll! in Key Vest. It siittzins and p ‘motes our progress and pros- perity. Betting’ on dog races would take a “cut” out of that payroll. The more extensive the betting the bigger the “cut,” and the bigger the “cut” the less money we would have to save or use for sound business purposes. Let owners of a dog track say what they wish about its “enter- tainment,” its success depends on money lost by bettors and won, ALWAYS WON, by the owners. | Dog racing is held at night. If we had a dog track on Stock Island, civilian employees and Navy personnel, their day's work done, would go to the track “just to see” the dogs run. The “see- ers” would put down a small bet to “make it more interesting,” and lose. If they lost again, they would bet more to try to get back what they lost. That would be the beginning of the betting fever that would take a “cut,” some small, some big, out of their weekly paychecks. Ask promoters this question, “Would you have considered es- tablishing a dog track on Stock Island ,had it not been ior our Navy payroll?” Promoters, all out-of-town men, say the proposed dog track will bring more tourists to Key West What for? The last three years K West did not have sufficient ac- commodations for all the tourists who wished to stay here. If the promoters really want to help| Key West, let them use the $300,000 to build a hotel or apartments here, so that we will have more accommodations for tourists. KEY WESTERS, DON’T LET THE DOG-TRACK PROMOTERS GET A “CUT” OUT OF OUR PAYROLL. The State which generally does not regulate moral issues says that dog racing is unfit for minors.” The President of the Key West Ministerial Assoviation said that he had been quoted as fearing the ele- ments who would come into Key West should the dog track be voted in next Tuesday. “We are more afraid of what the track will do to people already here. Bones Found George Roe’s, In-Law Says Roe Died In 1910 Storm Says Joseph Thompson, Son-In-Law Of Dead Man The bones found in a coffin off Boca Chica beach Tuesday are those of George Samuel Roe, who died in the *~"0 hurricane, Coroner Ira Albury said today. “All indications are that they are Roe’s remains,” Coroner Al- bury told The Citizen today. The bones were identified and the story told by Joseph R. Thomp- son, now 71, who was Roe’s son-in- law at the time of his death in 1910. Roe was 45 at the time. Roe’s family living at Boca Chi- ca beach in 1910, fled to Key West during the hurricane. They thought that Roe came with them, but he didr't. When they went back after the storm, they found Roe dead in a swamp, their house demolished. Thompson, a deputy sheriff, report- ed the death to William Gwynn who was then Coroner. Gwynn dep- utized. Thompson to bury the b_ Jy at Boca Chiea beach, since it was in Stich a state of decomposition. Thompson took the remaining boards from the Roe home, Dade county pine, and dug a five foot hole. Without nailing the boards to- gether, he placed the remains in the board-protected hole and put a lid on the coffin. There the body remained for 42 years until last Tuesday night. It was buried just north of the old Boca Chica bridge, Albury said. The boards had all but washed away, nly a few bones were left.
