Gingras (SIX ANGELS AT MY BACK by John Bell Clayton, novel published | by Macmillan Publishing Co., New York City, 239 pages.) The Gulf Coast of Florida where livings are made on shrimping and winter tourists is the setting for this very satisfactory first novel. The wisdom and beauty and the values of jookin’ and wealth ob- served from a distance, combine with laziness and poverty to shape the lives and loyalties of two boys 21 and 19, and a girl 19. They have played together near the Gulf’s waters since they were children, and when the story opens are liv- ing together in a shack owned by jone of the boys, Ed, who is the “I” of the story. The other boy, | called Turkey, is married to the girl, Mae, a beautiful red-haired girl with the budding instincts of a tramp. The boys lose their jobs because of their protest against a vicious boss’ treatment of an old sick | mule, Buttons. They lose a second | Job because the Ku Kluxers don't | want them fishing with a Negro. | These situations started the plot | ball really does roll. | The book is exciting. The villiains | jare crooks and killers, and the | Bible. Robbery and murder stalk |the pages. The two boys and the girl go through the experiences jlike children dreams. Excepting in’ oceasional |flashes they never seem to have} | any perspective on their own lives jor the veents around thern. Turkey wants pheasants to eat when they make their first large} amount of money. Ed wants to go | somewhere where he can play with| | snowballs. Mae gets a black slinky dress with a silver pelican up one — side and its bill resting on her| shoulder, | The story is told in the vernac ular and now and then this irri tates the reader as does Uncle Re bis frer-rabbiting and brer-fox ing. But on the whole it is a good job and convincing. Technically there is one part of the book which would be better if told straight. Chapter twenty-one attempts point-counterpoint treat ment of two separate incidents. The or uses his device to show two | ne muddling through/ | Swedish Ruling Bloc Retains Power In Vote STOCKHOLM, Sweden (#?—Prem- ier Tage Erlander’s Socialist-Ag- rarian coalition government re tained control of Sweden’s lower parliamentary house today but op- ‘position forces took six seats from the government bloc. The Communists also got a back in yesterday's parliament elections, losing three of their eight seats. Their voting strength dwin- dled 30 or so per cent in their traditional strongholds in North Sweden. where Sweden’s border is closest to Russia, and up to 50 per cent in the central and southern section of the country. The government won 136 of the 230 lower house seats on the basis of preliminary returns. Results by parties, including numerical votes and seats gained or lost: Social Democrats 1,701 925 3 lost Agrarians 402,095 3 Tost Liberals 894,396 2 gained Conservatives 502,157 7 gained Communists 165,182 3 lost Final returns awaited the count- ing of some 200,000 mail ballots, but these were not expected to change the preliminary results ma- terially. The government’s Liberal and Conservative opponents had hit hard at the economic difficulties of Sweden’s common man, assail- ing particularly the regime's tax- ation and housing policies. Erlander declared after the elec- tion results were announced that there would be no change in Swed- en’s foreign policy of armed neu- trality. The Premier said that the Socialist-Agrarian coalition would continue in office and that the elec- ton result was “no vote of cen- sure” of the government, but he conceded that the results mean an “undisputable gain” for the oppo- sition. The vote represented a strong comeback by the Conservatives, who had lost 16 seats in 1948.
