CAMP PENDLETON, Calif— (To The Key West Citizen)— Marine Major Richard L. Bland was promoted to his present rank recently during informal ceremonies at Camp Pendleton, Calif. A native of Key West, Ma- jor Bland enlisted in the. Ma- rine Corps at Orlando in De- cember 1942. One year later and after completion of the Officer’s Candidate Class at Quantico, was commissioned a second lieutenant. During the present Korean actions, Major Bland was the company commander of “B” Co., 1st Bn. Ist Marines in Korea in 1950 and later named executive officer of Weapons Co., 1st Bn., Ist Marines in Ko- rea in 1951. He is the holder of the Silver Star. Returning to the States in March 1951, Major Bland was assigned to his present station performing duties as Reserve Liaison and Training Section, Plans and Training Officer. Major Bland and his wife and daughter, Christine, pres- ently reside at 3030 Harding street, Carlsbad, Calif. SEA SECRETS - Q. Do any fish use their fins to walk along the ocean bottom? A. Yes several fishes have fins specially modified for this pur- pose. The sea robins or gurnards (Triglidae) have the first three rays of the pectoral fin free of the surrounding membrane, These fin rays are quite flex- ible and bent downward at their tips, and by employing them in crablike fashion the fish moves over sandy bottoms on which it lives. In the batfishes (OGco- cephalidae), the paired fins are fleshy and to an amazing degree limblike in form. These fishes move over the sea floor much in the manner of toads, Although neither the batfishes nor the sea robins are capable of living out of water, this limblike mod- ification of their fins often leads them to be mistaken for am- phibians. Q. What is the use of the small paddle which is found on the last pair of legs in certain crabs? + These are used in swimming. | Most crabs, such as stone crabs | spider crabs, and mud crabs, | lack these appendages; but | others, like the blue crab and | lady crab, have them more or | less well developed. In spite of their relatively small surface area the paddles are quite cap- | able of maintaining the crab | at the surface of the water| for some time. One small crab, Portunus sayi, spends its life clinging to pieces of floating Sargassum week, but uses its | THE KEY WEST CITIZEN . Page Z Grows In Ike’s Ranks ST. PETERSBURG (— Dissen- sion in the ranks of Eisenhower supporters in the state came to light here Sunday when a group of regular Repudlicans accusc” three leaders of the Citizens for jower movement of an at- *»mpted power grab. Just nine days before the GOP presidential candidate is to make an almost unprecedented speaking tour in Florida, Republicans from Pinellas, Polk, Dade, Manatee, Hillsborough, Hardee and Sarasota Counties attended a meeting here which aired the protest. Oliver McGov-an, president of the Sarasota County Republican Men’s Club, said “We laid our problems on the table” before State Chairman Harold Alexander, Ft. Myers. Alexander declined comment. McGowan said three Miami men closely knit by business and mar- riage have taken control of the citizen's movement and refuse to work with regular GOP leaders. He identified them as Curt Lan- don, Paul Helliwell and James Guilmartin. “Landon is a substantial client of Helliwell’s law firm,"? McGowan declared, “Guilmartin is a partner of Helliwell’s and Guilmartin is married to Landon’s daughter. “We find three men closely al- lied by business and marriage who, if their plan succeeds, will find themselves in a position of enor- mous power in Florida and re sponsible to no recognized Repub- lican authority in this state,” he continued. W. A. Washburne Jr., Sarasota County campaign manager, said Guilmartin as executive director of the citizens movement, has set a goal of half a million dollars to be raised in Florida, Washburne asked: “Who is going to account to the people of Florida for this slush fund?”. and he added: “Is it true, as -we have heard, that organizers for the Eisenhower clubs are now being recruited in Miami and being paid at the rate of $150 to $250 per week from funds already collected? I am con- vinced that Eisenhower and the Republican National Committee are not aware of this disgraceful situation and would not condone it in any degree.” Justice of the Peace Ed ‘Silk St. Petersburg, said- the purpose of the meeting was to determine “who is running the Eisenhower campaign in Florida—the Repub- lican Party or a man like Guil- martin who has been in the state only slightly overecne year.” Harry Swann, Republican candi- date for governor from Miami, added his voice to the protest, Interesting Notes Growth of corn is checked by cool nights.
