They will soon start paying $45 to tens of thousands of veterans for every month in which they spent six days within range of en- emy guns. But the job of sorting out and deciding claims’ will involve a mountain of paper work and a long time lag, experts in both Con-. gress and the Pentagon say. Congress approved this special combat pay retroactive to the start of the Korean campaign. Pentagon officials estimate it |i will cost between 250 and 300 mil- lion dollars. - The measure applies chiefly to infantrymen of the Army and pes rines. Sen. Moody (D.-Mich.), the sponsor, said the main purpose is to give hazardous duty pay to men on equal footing with fliers, submariners and para- ‘ troopers. ' Those now serving in Korea will get their July payments as part of their August checks, Pentagon officials said. In each case, the commanding officer will have to ROBERTS OFFICE SUPPLIES and EQUIPMENT 126 Duval Street Phone 250 dust received @ shipment of EATON AND WHITE AND WYCKOFF STATIONERY SEE OUR BARGAIN COUNTER MANY ITEMS AT COST METAL AND WOOD DESKS FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY SEE THE NEW ROYAL HH MODEL: RATES . The problems become more in- volved, the experts say, when they At Vonr Friendly Stores! start reviewing the long lists of|* men who have gone through Ko- rean combat in the past. This is easiest for combat in- fantrymen but becomes difficult for those in the Navy, Air Force or attached to numerous fringe units, such as supply and signal corps. Some experts say that a number of veterans who have seen bitter action might be ineligible. They say it is possible some infantry units might have been pulled from the line, badly chewed up, without | serving the required six days dur- ing a hot_month’s campaign. Nearly two million official claim forms are being printed for the use of ex-servicemen. The forms will be available at most post of- fices by Sept. 15. f * ANYTHING CONCERNING } AUTOMOBILES SEE THE TWINS Pu 1870-1871 Dr. J. A.
