Monday, August 18, 1952 From The Press Box By OSCAR MILIAN It seems like Pepper Martin, the Miami Beach Flamingo baseball manager is just as popular in Key West as he is in Miami if not more so. Did you know that at Saturday’s game (which unfortun- ately was rained out with Key West leading 3-0 in the third) Old timer Pepper took time out to come over to the stands to chat with a few old time friends? Among those talking of days gone by were Dewey Riggs, Leland Sawyer, Willie Sawyer, and quite a number of kids of the junior league. The kids seemed to have been getting a big kick out of Martin’s story for they were all ears and eyes. . Speaking of likeable baseball managers, Max Macon, the Miami Sun Sox pilot is a well loved leader by his mates and friends who know him personally. Max, the type of manager who is not seeking glory for himself but for his young roster ball club, walks into the pitcher’s mound and releases the thrower, if it appears to him that whoever is hurling, to be in danger of losing a game, he would rather face the loss. Did you notice Max try to save Gil Torres from losing the game to the Conchs last Thurs- day? The Miami Beach Flamingo’s wild inning in which they pounded three Key West pitchers, for 11 hits and thirteen runs Friday night is believed to@e another Florida International League record in which the ‘Conchs have taken part. 17 batters went around’ to fatten “the hazard of changing parties. may bring bad with good changes.” By MARVIN L. ARROWSMITH DENVER (#—Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, planning a flying for- ay into the traditionally Democrat- ic South, reportedly is convinced he can swing some Southern states to the Republican column in the November presidential election. The GOP nominee, it was learned, is arranging for a swift tour by plane which will take him into perhaps a dozen major cities in at least seven Southern states. The Dixie campaign totr—un- for a Republican pres- idential candidate is scheduled tentatively to start Sept. 2, the day after Labor Day. Eisenhower s planning to. fly south from New York and spend two or two and a half days in a whirlwind invasion of Democratic strongholds. ‘The decision to campaign in the South was made after the general conferred here a week ago with an eight-state delegation of Dixie supporters They reportedly convinced him the Republicans have a chance to crack the Solid South for the first time since 1928, when Herbert Hoover ples cia personally campaigning there. Eisenhower’s projected Southern swing by plane will be a depar- ture from the traditional whistle- stop campaigning by train. How- ever, he will turn later to thaf type of travel. Eisenhower aides planning the Dixie trip say privately it is likely the general will speak in: Richmond, Va.; Atlanta, Ga.; Birmingham, .Ala.; Miami and Jacksonville, Fla.; New Orleans, La.; Dallas, Ft. Worth and Hous- ton, Tex.; and Memphis, Tenn. Speeches in several of the South- ern cities will be at the airports. Additional cities with airports able DCs plane in which the will travel may be put on the later. call for an over- s City, Kan, ference Thursday with | ers and other supporters without changing parties and that | en Midwestern states. In the second game, set for 9:00 p.m., the league-leading Coca Cola club will tackle the Navy squad, their batting averages in the frame. Key Westers may razz the umps until they set °em nuts, but we doubt very much if any one would intentionally try to hurt any of the officials, When umpire Charlie Williams was hit on the wrist last Thursday it, 999 of the 1000 fans felt like they would like to get their hands on the kid or kids who was responsible for that act, gave all indication that the damage was done with a sling shot from the outside left field wall. Here’s one for the ‘books, Nap Reyes stole second on catcher Chuck Ehlmer of the Miami Beach Flamingos last Saturday night, Yes, it was unintentianally, the hit and run play was on but manager Barney Lutz failed to come through. Unfortunately, this stolen base will not go to the records as the game was rained out. While all of Miami was wasting a lot of time trying to make the world believe that young Billy Har- ris had pitched a no-hitter last week, we failed to notice that our George “Viti” Vidal had pitched a good game against the Sox hold- ing the league-leading club in the hitting department to 6 hits and 2 runs. \ Ed Zielinski pitched his first full game of the season last week against the Miami Sun Sox and it took the left slings of the Cleve- land boy to down the Miamians, Old reliable Nap Reyes was a big factor in the victory with his fancy “majagua.” The Key West Conchs have brok- en into the winning column again, defeating the Miami Sun Sox and West Palm Beach over the week- end. oday’s Stock Market By RADER WINGET NEW YORK (—Selling in the railroads dragged the stock mar- ket lower today, The pressure on the railroads was moderate and losses extended to between 1 and 2 points at the outside, The rest of the list followed along in the wake of carriers with the bulk of the decline in fractions.
