PETERSBURG # — Only by time and patience can Florida's new election law be made more specific, in the opinion of Secre- tary of State R. A. Gray. He pre- dicted Friday both winners and losers will want some changes in the law but did not specify the changes. Gray spoke at the con- vention of the Florida Association of Supervisors of Registration which ends here today. McCarty To Speak KISSIMMEE # — Dan McCarty, Florida’s Democratic governor nominee, will give a talk at the Florida Junior Chamber of Com- be completed Jan. 1. Page 9 The. Veterans , Corner Here are authoritative «ne swers frem the Veterans Ade ministration to four questions of interest to former servicemen: Q. Iam a World War II vetere an takig a correspondence course under the GI Bill. May I switch to a classroom course im the same field this coming fall, even though the GI cut-off date has passed? A. No. Under post-cut-off-date regulations, veterans may not switch from correspondence to classroem training, even if it’s in the same field. Q. My husband, who was @ World War II veteran, died re- cently because of a service-con- nected disability. He did not use his GI loan benefit. I'd like to buy a house with the insurance he left me. Is there any way I can get a GI loan to help me do so? I have not remarried. A. Yes. Under the law, unre- married widows of such World War II veterans may be eligible for GI loans, on the same basis as -he veterans themselves, Q. I am getting a VA pension for a ‘otal and permanen: non- service-connected disability. In figurine out my yearly income, to determine whether I am eli- gible, do ™ count the money my wife ‘rings in as a seamstress? A. No. Your wife’s income is her’s and therefore is not used in computing your total yearly income for pension purposes. Q. While on active duty dur- ing peacetime in 1949, I was’ dis- abled in a traiaing accident and was paralyzed from the waist down. Would I be entitled to a VA gront for a ““wheelvhair home,” or must the disability have occurred in time of war? A. If you met all the other requirements of th. law, you may be eligible for a “wheel- chair home,” even though\syour disability was incurred... during peacetime. There’s. no restriction, under law, as to when a veteran suffered his disability in service. (Veterans livine in Key West who wish further informution about their benefits should write the VA Office at Key West.) Nine Unemployed Receive $151 TALLAHASSEE, A decrease of about $2,000 in unemployment in- surance payments for the week ending August 8 was reported by Chairman Raymond E, Barnes of the Florida Industrial Commission, as an approximate drop of 200 in the number of unemployed as com- pared to the preceding week was Tevealed. The week’s figures show 11,877 persons receiving unemployment insurance, totaling $221,594, making an average check payment over the state of $18.41. Check pay- ments are based on a percentage of the worker’s weekly wage, the maximum being $20; the minimum $5. For the corresponding week in 1951 the report shows slightly lower totals as 13,011 persons received $213,483 in weekly payments. Within this county 9 persons re- ceived $151 in insurance checks for the week. WEED SOMETHI ; “tf WANT ADS bal —— Maa MONEY 2 WE LOANS ON
