“Buscando La Carta” oN, Citizen Staff Photo | “LOOKING FOR THE LETTER”—is what these five Directors, and two friends of San Carlos are doing! They are, right to left: Juan Lopez, Julio Cabanas, Jr., Mario Mata, Manuel Perez-Davila, Benny Fernandez, Mrs. Julio Cabanas, Jr., and Citizen reporter. The letter in question was writ- ten in 1924—making a retroactive gift from the Cuban citizens of Key West to the Cuban Gov- ernment—in return for assistance and support of the cultural aims of San Carlos, KEY WEST HONORED (Continued From Page One) excessive government control, and urged each community to recog- nize and take care of it’s own pro- diems. Following the new State Presi- Gent’s acceptance speech, Mrs. Joan Mardis made a presentation of some sterling silver to Mrs. Har- vey, as a gift fram the Key West Club. Mrs. Alice Nix was accorded a place on the Welcome Committee at the Convention Several important resolutions such as having Florida join in the almost nationwide-- Deserting hus- band and father Extradition Law- Maintenance of Separate Women’s Prisons for Florida; and comple- tion of the “Forest Hills Home.” for delinquent colored Girls near Ocala-- were just a few of the pro- jects that the State of Florida Biisi- ness and Professional Women plan to work on this coming year. And that even theugh this is a Cuban property, the San Carlos did not consult the Mayoralty in Havana, the Cuban Consulate, or the Hava- na Tourist Bureau or any other competent authority. After listening to the justifiable indignation of the San Carlos Di- rectors-- because the building is not being demolished-- In fact only the theatre itself and the marquee are to be renovated~ and that at the expense of the new lessees, “it was suggested to confront Senor | Raul Alpizar, Director of the Ha- vana Tourist Bureau, since the El ;Mundo statement definitely attri- buted to his office. With the handsome Cuban Con- sul, Oscar Morales, holding the offending newspaper article in one hand and leading the way, the whole directorate of the San Carlos plus a Citizen reporter and photo- grapher, marched down the stairs ; and crowded into the tiny Havana | Tourist Office which is situated on | the left hand side of the Palace Theatre Building. Consul Morales showed Havana Tourist Director Alpizar the article and the definite wording attributing this “misinfor- EXTRA RIDING COMFORT tt improved Knee-Action mation” to his office. Alpizar, excitedly waving both arms over his head vehemently denied all knowledge and blame for the statements in the article. He practically started denying them before Julio Cabanas, Jr. and Consul Morales had finished making their accusations, for the statements in El Mundo and the in- correct stories that had gone out over several Cuban radio stations. He kept saying “Lies! Lies! Lies! They could have blamed anybody, I do not know why they chose me.” Alpizar was then asked by the Citizen Reporter if any other per- son or persons in his office might be responsible for such statements. He admitted that no person other than himself had the authority to make any statement as coming from his office. All of this might result in a stalemate, particularly if Mayor Pozo of Havana carries out his alleged threat of stopping the re- novation at the San Carlos, How- ever, Cuban Consu} Morales has all the facts and the truth of the matter well in hand and will com- municate further with both El Mundo and Cuban State Depart- ment. The land was given by retroactive deed and the sum of one dollar to the Cuban National Government. In the event that the Cuban government no longer wishes to help maintain San Carlos, it is to be returned | to the directorate of San Carlos for | the sum of one dollar. The San Carlos, in the interest | of Cuban affairs charges no rent | to either the Havana Tourist of- fice on the one side, or to the office of the Cuban Consulate on the other. Aside from dues and donations from members, they receive something under two hun- dred dollars a month from the Cuban Government for the main. tenance of fine Cuban cultural re- lations between Key West and Cu- ba. It takes more than that small amount to maintain such a build- ing, pay an educational director and her assistants, janitor service, utilities, books and lunches for the free children’s classes, as well as the free nighttime classes for those interested in learning Spanish. The | leasing of the theatre at a good | sum--after it’s fifteen year depres- sion please, may help to make all these things more readily possible. All of the hardworking directors of San Carlos, and it’s educational di- rector, Senorita Benildes Remond deserve much credit for main- taining as high a standard as they did on such a limited budget. The newly renovated theatre and it’s intelligent English and Spanish mo- vie film program should further enhance the Cuban American cul- tural relations and understanding which the San Carlos is helping to fostor, it was said.
