L€dr, Alfred Burrell Mac- Kown attached to the Surface Anti-Submarine Development -De- tachment has been transferred to the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D. C. He will re- port the latter part of May to his new duty station. Born in New York. City, the son by prior marriage of Mrs. Florence V. Foster, 57 East 21st street, Patterson, N. J., LCdr. MacKown was educated in the Patterson, N. J., and was gradu- ated from the U.S. Naval Acad- emy in 1941. His first sea duty was aboard the Battleship U.S.S. New Mex- icp. he went to the Cruiser USS sdathwestern Pacific and took part in the reoccupation of the Aleutians. From the New Mex- ice, -he wen to the Cruiser USS Quincy and was present on board Gufing the Normandy and south- ¢rfi France invasions. At the con- clusion of his tour of sea duty, he attended the post-graduate schools of Annapolis and the University of California at Los Angeles from which he obtained his master of science degree in applied physics. Before reporting to SurAsDevDet, he was execu- tive officer on board the De- stroyer USS Witek. LCdr. MacKown’s service med- als include the American Defense with Fleet Clasp, American Area, European-African-Middle Eastern Area with two stars, Asiatic-Pa- cific Area with one star, and World War II Victory medal.
