THE SOUTHERNMOST NEWSPAPER IN THE U.S. A. VOL. LXXII. No. 88 arbonell Asks Ministers KEY WEST, FLORIDA, or Opportunity To Address heir Group On On Open Town’ Declares Key West Has No ‘Real’ Gambling Louis Carbonell, city commissioner, today asked the Key West Ministerial Association for an oppor- tunity to address the body on the subject of an “open town.” Carbonell asked that he be heard before judgement is passed. The city commissioner wants to make it clear that he is oposed to ‘thoodlums’ and ‘racketeers’. And if they ever come to Key West—he will be the first to drive them out. “When people say they are against an ‘open town’, are they also against churches and charit- able organizations raising funds by raffles, cards; bingo?” “Let’s take the Navy Charity Carnival? Where did the Money. go? Every dime. was. given to some worthy cause, such as the Red Cross, Polio, Cancer and other fine organizations. “One civic organization raffled an automobile in order to’ re! brant wt 4 money for x-ray Monroe Gace “If the town were closed, and the law strictly enfroced, all of this would have to stop. "I sincerely believe we do not have any ‘real’ gambling in Ker Wost. What we have can termed simply “ ‘ekichon nes” “This question of gambling has been brought up many times in city commission meetings, The game man who brings the matter up at the meeting, forgets all abput it at termination of ‘the affair. Nothing is ever done. “Once again, I'd like to ask the Ministerial Assocation for the opportunity of addressing their body on what I mean by a liberal policy, and an ‘ open town’: “I hope that they will grant me this request.” Ministerial Assn. Not For Open City The Key West Ministerial As- sogiation has come out strongly agi st the “open city” policy that would allow gambling, ete., in the Island City. When it began rain- ing we and a neighbor sat in our car for shelter. “At about 3:45 we drove to the point and saw my husband, his uncle and the other two men, stil} fishing from their boat, tied to the piling. “My. wv nd loves tw fish— and doesn't like to stop when he gets started. “About half an hour later we ie} vent back to tell them it was time ito go home. “We looked and they were gone. | We tried to geta boat from near- by. Mrs. Caspar and I waited in the car outside Boca Chica e. He was gone about 45 minutes.” When he returned Puopolo told the women that they had been advised by the Coast Guard to go out to the point where they had last seen the men and blink their ear head lights five times. The Coast Guard boat searching for the missing men would answer in the same way. “It took us until 10 to get a re- ponse from the Coast Guard boat. Then they discontinued the search about 2 o'clock.” Meanwhile Mrs. Hicks went home and tried to rest. Sleeping |Legion Post Will REP. POSEPH W.
