THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1950 Capital Speculates As Truman Hits At Byrnes Bi EDWARD H. SIMS, The Citizen's Washington Correspondent WASHINGTON, D. C.—Of all the political maneuverings in Washington, of late, no doubt the juiciest was the release of a book by Jonathan Daniels, ex-White House aide: The book tore} — into James F. Byrnes’ reputation with a vengeance seldom dis- played. It would certainly end national respect and _ affection for little Jimmy Bymes if believed by the majority of the people. Behind the release of the Daniels book lies a story, in- volving the President. The people of the country are more in- terested in the President's role than in Daniels’. Before coming to @ny conclusion, a look at the facts are in order. James F. returned from Moscow after that now-famous session with Communist chiefs, and tendered his resignation. dlmost a year before he actually resigned. When he did resign, President Truman sent him a letter congratulating him on the service he had done his country. At that time everyone assumed the President was sigcere. happened to change this national opinion until after James Brynes made a speech in June of 1949. At that time he warmed that some of the administration's programs threatened to make the average citizen a galley slave, with an oar, on the great ship of state. a ie Certainly, Truman did not like that nor can anyone . blame him| Today’s Anniversaries for resenting it to a degree. What you're looking at is Buick’s modern version of the high-com- pression valve-in-head engine, which gains extra wallop from the fact that it uses the exclusive Fire- ball combustion principle. We could list a lot of mechanical reasons why fuel gives up extra power in a Fireball engine—how it’s wrapped in a swirling, ball- shaped charge—how it burns with a smooth, clean thrust that Now all this sounds thrilling, you say, but how about the feed- bills for all these horses? How about miles-per-gallon? The practical answer to that one is found in this year’s experience with the SuPER and Speciat—and even the ROADMASTER. In all three, the horsepower was stepped up at the start of the year —and in all three, happy owners report the best mileage in modern Byrnes.
