MOORE (EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the second in a series of articles on the symptoms of early cancer, furnished The Citizen by members of the Monroe County Medical Society.) By HERMAN K. MOORE, M.D. An important symptom in lead- ing the physician to suspect the possible presence of cancer is a lump or thickening — usually painless — that appears in the breast, lip, tongue, neck, under- arm region, abdominal region, or, less frequently, in other parts of the body. 4 Such lumps or thickenings, also should indicate the possibility of cancer to the average layman, and should send him to his physi« cian at once. Because such ‘lumps _ usually are painless, most patients put off visiting their doctors. If the lump happens to be cancer, this procrastination is extremely dan- gerous, and may result in death to a patient who could have been cured if he had sought medical attention when the symptom was first noticed. Not all lumps mean that can- cer is present. In fact, the med- ical evidence shows that the maj- ority of lumps are not cancerous —certainly not in the beginning. But many of them are cancer in an early stage when the patient first notices their appearance. Others’ can later develop into might well tackle is that con-| cerned with amphibious lanling operations. Only recently de- veloped progress along this line is still in the infant stage, and much could be done to speed on landing operations, develop new methods, ete. These and other fields would be exploited by this group of new era naval enthusiasts. They seek no strategic bomb- ing authority. They see no fu- ture in bucking ex-Army cap-; tain, Harry Truman, Secretary Johnson, or even Chairman Brad- ley of the joint chiefs of staff. They, however, don’t think Mat-| thews can help them much, their own secretary. And they admit these are trying times for old; navy men—what with only one; battleship in commission. Everyone should seek immediate advice from a com- petent physician if any unusual mass appears. The competent doctor is the only person quali- fied’ to make a final decision. Women should pay particular attention to lumps that appear in-the breasts. About one-fifth of all cancers among females occur in the breasts. Usually the first sympton is a lump. The size of the mass should not lead the pat- ient either to discount “t or to be- come unduly alarmed. Small lumps no larger than a split-pea can be cancer; and large tumors may be benign. But failure to seek immediate medical advice is nothing but gambling with life itself. Treatment of cancer of the} breast in its early stages brings) about a cure in 75 to 85 per cent of the cases and if treated when it is just beginning all breast cancer can be cured. In moder- ately advanced stages, the cure rate drops to about 20 per cent, and in well advanced stages, can- cer of the breast, like all other) kinds of cgncer, is fatal. | Though cancer of the breast is the type most, often associated with the painless lump of thick- ening, other types of cancer also} may first reveal themselves in this way. In the region of the! tongue, mounth or lip. a lump may indicate early cancer — wheih can be cured in a high per- | centage of cases if treated early. sh in the form of a mass which can} begun at once.
