The nearest} water source was several blocks @way. Since Shawn had to wash off his body makeup between numbers, he had to have a gal-! vanized tub of water put into the tent for removal of makeup. Seven times during that sched- ule, he put on his complete and very complicated makeup for the dances. But for only three actual @ppearances! The other four times, rain stopped the show. That's why he prefers indoor con- certs. In presenting dance recitals and lectures, Shawn says one or the other is simpler. The com- bination of the two is hazardous. Like a football star, or any other | athlete, a dancer must warm upy for some time before going into action in order that muscle co- ordination may be smooth. When he has to stand for half an hour er more, talking, and then go into a dance demonstration Shawn says “The muscles are apt to become set and the flow of march tempo. There are a thousand and one stories, and Shawn expects to publish them in a book called “A Thousand and One Night Stands.” He does his own typing and writ- ing. Asked if it wasn’t a tedious job, Shawn replied, “There is no| such thing as great art without discipline. It’s like water power. If you turn water power loose on the rampage, the energy becomes | a destructive flood, then a marsh} or swamp. But regulated, dis- ciplined, it becomes helpful and creative in irrigation or the force behind a power dam.” Key West residents and visitors} alike can see such a power in active demonstration tonight at the Key West High School, when ! Ted Shawn opens his dance re-|ber of Commerce, about other cital at 8 p.m. Tickets are avail- able at the door as well as at Southernmost Flowers and Gifts, and. at Roberts Office Supply. The concert is sponsored by the Key West Junior and Senior choice. For myself, I really can’t tell the difference.” “What effect will this have on; our local fishermen?” | “Any activity on the water- front will particularly aid labor.| This industry, if it ‘pans out’ will help to level out seasonal em- ployment that is connceted with most fishing industries.” Hice went on to say that the Key West shrimp is of a ‘pink- ish’ color, and different from the This, according to Hice, should be exploited. He thought that some effort should be made to have “Life” magazine cover this new industry. And this morning he will see Harold Laubscher, manager of the Key West Cham- business matters.
