es Chapter 23 i ing booming voice of Inspector Ryan reverberated through the warehouse as he snapped out a series of commands. “Clancy,” he told the first offi- cer to arsive at the watchman’s room. “I want you to work on those’ wall shelves; spring them * open, pry ‘them loose or rip them down—I don’t care which. But work: fast! There’s a ¢oncealed door in. those shelves, and I’m “. betting McGann and Rosario are behind 1.” As’ the officers scattered to organize their squads, the Inspec- tor selected a dozen sharpshoot- ers from the patrolmen and de- tectives and lined them up, with guns drawn, behind the members of Captain Clancy’s command who were attempting to find the hidden door. “There’s a spring mechanism on a section of these .shelves,” Clancy reported, “but it’s a neat job of joining!” j He ran his sensitive, educated fingers along the edges of the shelves, tapped the heavy back which rested against the wall. His hand stopped suddenly as it en- countered a thin, vertical inden- tation, close to a shelf partition. “Hand me one of those thin- edged jimmys,” he told a patrol- man. He inserted its thin tip into the tiny opening and began tug- ging it back and forth. The crevice widened. “Here it is, In- spector! Now bring up _ those crowbars, boys.” . With Captain Clancy directing the operation, the men. insert prys and crowbars in the crevide. Four of them took firm grips én the long handle of one bar. Grunting .and_ straining, they threw their full weight and mus- cle against it. From the back of the shelves, they heard a screech of metal, like that of a heavy steel pin being torn from its moorings. An entire section of the shelves, three feet wide and six feet high, swung out about three inches on concealed hinges. “All right, men,” said Inspec- MANHATTAN EDITOR tor Ryan quietly. “Get set to close in the moment that door'’s The Weather © | FORECAST Key West and Vicinity: Partly :cloudy and continued cool this | afternoon .aad tonight: slightiv | warmer Tuesday. It swung wide—revealing a_ high, dark rectangle that led into total blackness. “N cGANN and Rosario!” the Inspector called out. “There’s three hundred armed cops around this building. You haven’t got one chance of making a break for it. I’m giving both of you just thirty seconds to come out with your hands in the air— otherwise you'll come out feet first.” “There’s be a dozen dead cops before you get us out,” McGann called out derisively. A; rifle cracked sharply from the darkness, and a bullet ripped into the hinged shelf section, three inches from Ryan’s head. Crouching down, two detectives moved toward the pitch-black room. Another switched on a powerful flashlight, picking out stacks of heavy boxes. ‘ The crash of a pistol shot was followed by a yell of pain from one of the advancing detectives. ! “My shoulder!” he gasped, as| two patrolmen pulled him back by the feet. His face twisted into a painful grimace. ‘Must’ve cracked my _ collarbone.” Two patrolmen rushed him to a police ambulance. “That's just a sample,” McGann. yelled. “And don’t forget this, you flatfeet; we're standing right behind that blonde and her newspaper pal. You can start shooting anytime!” He laughed with a loud, defiant exultance. Hawkins nudged Inspector Ryan, pointing to a thick sheet of steel that lay on a shelf. “If one of your men carried that ahead of him,” he whispered, “he’d be able to get into that room without being winged.” “Great!” said Ryan. Turning to a detective, he ordered: “Get that _ ‘THE KEY WEST CITIZEN: sheet of stécl and use it as a shield; we've got to get a man a in there to divide their fire.” Holding the thick plate ahead of him, the detective crawled forward, Two shots crashed into it, almost knocking it from ‘his hands. But he held on, despite ‘}the jarring shock of a third- bul= let, this one from. the rifle, until he had put a pile of boxes: be- tween him and the two gunmen, Meanwhile, three ‘other. detec- tives plunged through the open door’ in a concerted rush, One detective poked a flash- light around the corner of a-bax, switching on its beam momen- tarily. A rifle bullet smashed“ its face, showering him with glass fragments, In the moment before the light was extinguished, another detective had spotted Rosario, toward the center of the wall opposite from the secret ' door. Charles: Dawson, handcuffed “to a water pipe, stood in front of - him. The detective noted in that split second that Rosario’s head projected about two inches above Dawson’s. : Holding his own flashlight. at arm’s length, the detective sepa- rated two boxes with his..:free hand and thrust his’ service .re- volver through the opening. For perhaps a tenth of a second he pressed the turn-on button, shin- ing the light into Dawson’s and Rosario’s faces. - Rosario’s gun fired almost: si- multaneously with the | detec- tive’s, wrecking the. flashlight. It was Chimp’s last destructive venture; the detective’s precise- ly-calculated shot whizzed almost through the channel of Dawson’s cowlick, striking the center :of Rosario’s forehead. Cae McGann’s obituary was terse: “Dammit—he’s got the. hand- cuff keys!” he muttered. McGann, needing them to free Jean. from the water pipe so he could use hey as a movable shield, ‘moved toward Rosario. Jean redched-a swift, instinctive decision. a Her foot shot out in the ‘dark- ness, tripping McGann. Falling. to one knee, he accidentally fired: his gun.
