Consolidation of County and a City, Governments. ‘ Community Auditorium, MONOGRAPH “| Dear Readers: The shortage of food and its high prices in the United States is due to great extent to the thousands of tons of food sent to Europe. We are over- emotional and somewhat dramatic in our aid to Europeans, while forgetting the needy in our own borders. THE ORACLE. “THE COMMON COLD This is the time of year when the peo- ple of Key West, along with othérs; suf- ~fer from the so-called common cold. Gen- erally, it is neglected, but physicians ad- 2 vise that one be careful when suffering from this almost every-month ailment. : During the school year there ‘is also a *- spread of diseases among children, such \Jas measles. Many of these begin with “.symptoms comparable to those of a cold, _,and for that reason parents should be on guard against such troubles and realize «that medicines effective against colds are -of little value in treating them. Wellinformed people know that scientists have been unable to find the “cause of colds, or to devise proper treat- “ment that is anywhere near perfect in re- swlts. Not so, however, with many medi- seines on the market. They proclaim their rpowers,, ahd while many -of them are beneficial. in treating some of the symp- ~ toms, none of them, as far as we know, remove the undeflying causes. é RUSSIA FIGHTS INFLATION Confirmation of rumors that the economy of the Soviet Union has suffered -- seriously from inflation comes with the “.decree for currency reform and providing °.for new rubles, which will be worth, of- = ficially, ten of the rubles retired. my It seems that the Soviet government o*has determined to abolish rationing but to = put “food and industrial goods” and con- r-sumer goods under unified price control. ss A peculiarity of the program is that r- savings deposits up to 3,000 rubles will be exchanged ruble for ruble. However,, one having cash in. hand will be given only -one of the new rubles for ten of the old. The loans of the government will be ~ merged .on the basis of one new rubleyfor .) three old rubles. i Tre Soviet government says the action _ is aimed at speculators who have accumu. lated ‘great amounts of money and asserts that it would be intolerable for specuta- tors, who enriched themselves during the ~» War and accumulated considerable sums, BUGABOO Millions of words have been printed and blared over the air about Communists, but we are yet to hear an exact definition of Communism. In England, for instance, the govern- ment is taking over a goed many private enterprises, including the Bank of Eng- land, and is preparing to take over others, including the coal mines and _ the steel mills, but Labor party. leaders resent any reference to thema as Communists, or of having communistic leanings. Yet many things that have been done in England, since the Lakor government has been in power, has been. done in Rus- sia, which proudly adhers to its Commup- ism. Admittedly, an Engtishman’s liberty is not ground undey heel as is the so-called liberty under which a Russian lives, but if the British Labor government continues to take over industries, it won't be long before its totalitarianism, will be almost as pronounced as it is in Russia. We have heard discussions in Key West about Communism and Socialism, and always one grooved into the other, but Socialists are loud in their denuncia- tion of Communists, For that matter, he is a wise man. in- deed who can tell the difference between the Democratic: and Republican parties other than in’ minor degrees. Some- times it is said that the Republicans are more conservative than the Democrats, viewed as liberals, then or representative who makes a speech that is ultra-conservative. No man_ has ever been more conservative than Carter Glass was during his long service in Washing- ton. While Communism is detested by Americans generally, yet we must admit that it has come to be something of a bugaboo. A willingness to do a full day’s work explains the advancement of those who labor. FOLLOW THE TRUTH If the spirit of Christmas prevailed, not just for a few days in December, but throughout the year, this undoubtedly would be a better world in which to live. Most of us all too soon forget the noble sentiments which inspire us as the holiday approached, We become involved in rou- tine matters and postpone carrying out some of the fine ideas we had at Christ- mas time. Some of us may even have neglected answering a certain important letter which reminds us of an important work which is being done in our community— work we believe in and want to see con- tinued, But this work-cannot be continued un- less we remember to answer that letter. For this particular letter enclosed sheets of Christmas Seals. We wanted those seals. We look forward to receiving them each year because Christmas Seals have become a symbol of the fight being waged here against tuberculosis. We believe in that fight. We want to participate in it for our own protection and for the protec- tion of our families. Sometimes, however, we overlook the fact that funds are needed for the cam- paign against tuberculosis and that our tuberculosis association depends solely upon our generous purchase of Christmas Seals to support ‘its tuberculosis control work. Sometimes we forget to answer that Christmas Seal Jetter. But it isn’t too late. Let’s keep the spirit of Christmas alive, Let’s follow through by answering that letter. Intelligence makes any business move faster, but it is an essential in connection with the publishing of a newspaper. * PERSPECTIVE Let’s keep a perspective on the scan- dalous revelations in connection with Maj. Gen. Meyers, of the Army Air Force. The Air Force built up from 25,000 men at the time of Pearl Harbor to 2,- 400,000 when the war ended. From spending millions of dollars leisurely the organiation had to spend billions of dollars in a hurry. Hf the great job was done with only one scandal the fact is remarkable. Even to have an opportunity to buy up goods | the discovery of a few more cases of the after the end of the rationing system. ee Ui ies Hi nn alla - Swaias are reasonably safe just now; -- not many girls give their fellows the gate at this season of the year. same nature cannot mar the gallant rec- ord of the Air Force nor dim the lustre of the men who wen control of the air in Eu- rope and contributed greatly to the over- whelming defeat of Japan.
