P. $.—Possily I am being a little hasty in this matter, and if you will consider paying me the stipulated sum over a period beauty treatments that erupted into an inter-office tiff this week. Executive Director Ethel M. Manning of the beauty culture board said she interpreted the law to mean that members of the same household may not give each other manicures, home permanent waves, shampoos and similar treatments. Sevéral people sent letters in protest to Attorney General Tom Watson—one asking if it is now necessary for children to drop by a beauty shop each morning to have their hair combed. Watson then called in the press and said first that it. was not upto the Board of Beauty Culture to interpret the law and, secondly, that their inter- pretation was incorrect. It is not against the law, Wat- son said, for members ‘of the family to give home beauty treatments to each other, not- withstanding state board -posters warning that practice of beauty culture outside of a_ registered beauty shop with or without pay is punishable by fine or jail sentence. “Next thing we know,” Wat- son said, “the barbers will be telling the men they can’t shave and powder themselves. Miss Manning said, after Wat- son’s statement, that she had not meant to imply that mothers could not comb heir own chil- dren’s hair, and she thought that a lot of sand was being raised about’ nothing. i (AP THE AMERICAN FLAG is lowered on an Italian dock at Leg- horn, Italy, Sunday, at the Transport Admiral Sims (right) pre- pares to sail for the United States with the last American occu- pation troops to leave Italian soil.
