Hawkins rode down te the South Street waterfront, where Inspector Ryan directed 75 men in a search of Pier 31. They clam- bered al] over the pier, while po- lice launches pulled in to the dock-side, peering into every cor- ner of the wharf. Hawkins and Inspector Ryan descended a steep stairway to the basement, the warehouse man- ager at their sides. It was packed almost to the ceiling with stacks of crated merchandise. “Store any trucks or cars down here?” the Inspector asked. “Just the watchman’s car,” the manager answered. “It’s over there in the corner.” Hawkins and the Inspector walked to the car, observing that its hood was covered with dust. Hawkins lifted up the hood, peer- ing inside. “Sunercharger on it.” he said laconically. “Watchman must be a speedy driver.” “He’s a bug on motors,” the manager explained. “Fools around with them at night when there’s nothing doing. Sometimes he doesn’t bring it to work for weeks; then he’ll leave it here for a few days. Must be two days’ dust on it right now.” “That occurred to me, too,” said Hawkins cryptically. “Think I'll take a lock at the inside, Inspec- tor.” Hawkins made a careful in- spection of the interior, examin- ing a pair of folded blankets on the rear seat. Picking them up, he detected a faint odor of perfume on one. The scent struck an in- stantly responsive chord, Marion Solano: ohn Marzyke Soon An enjoyable afternoon was spent by all. He dusted off his hands gingerly. “Quite a dirty spot, though, if you ask me.” ; Hawkins, meanwhile, was study- ing a massive set of shelves that covered one wall of the room from floor to ceiling. “What are these used for?” he asked the manager. “They stored auto parts on them a few years back. This used to be a tru garage, you know. No good fo us, now: but they’re ‘just too big and heavy to move.” Harry tapped the rear wall of = ey which gave off a dull thud, “What’s behind the wall?”: he asked. : “Just an abandoned tenement; hasn’t been occupied for years. i tried to get into it from the street last year to check some sewer trouble, but I couldn’t locate the owner. No chance to break in; the doors and windows are covered with steel plates an inch thick.” Hawkins, scrutinizing the floor intently in front of the shelves, i alia a footprint -.. the thick ust. “Take a look at that, Inspec- tor!” he burst out excitedly.
