He} got in touch with the tenant and invited him to lunch. During the {meal the ‘rich young man ask- Jed the tenant a lot about what {had happened to him since they |were in college. In the course of the conversation the tenant told {him he and his family had been put out of his apartment, and that his wife and children had jgone to live with relatives until {he could find a home. * He told the tenant he would jlike to find & home for him. The tenant thanked him for his kind offer and said he would be very grateful for his help. He asked the tenant what price he want- ed to pay for a place to live. He jsaid he had been paying $35 a {month but that he could pay up to $50. | Several. days later, the rich lyoung man asked his secretary jto call the tenant and tell him he | had located a new home for $45, a month, But it actually rented for $75. Even with all his con- nections, he had been unable to find a house or apartment for |$50 or less. So he simply entered’! into an agreement with the rent-* al agent for the $75 home, whom{ he knew well, to charge the ten- ant only $45 and send him (the jrich young man) ,a bill for the remaining $30. The tenant was happier than he had been in a long time. He immediately called his wife long- distance and gave her the good } news about their new home. Boasters “Two days without food and |water,” announced the World’ |War II veteran to an admiring jaudience, “Pretty bad,” agreed a middle- jaged man; “but how would you |like to have fought in the | trenches in Flanders? Some- times we were up to the waist.in jicy water and mud for a week for more.” | “Call yoursel soldiers?” snort- led a very old man, who had hob- jbled up. “Pah! When I was in the |Zuhr war a spear knocked me ‘down and pinned me to the {ground. I couldn’t move, and I jlay there for a week without food jand drink.” | “By jove!” exclaimed the World |War II veteran. “It must have been very painful.” “Not very,” answered the old man; “only when I laughed.” casks MARY MARGARET McBRIDE, Famous Radio Commentator One of the finest jobs ever done by American house- wives has been in saving used fats! Since 1942, over 800 million pounds have been salvaged. But, as Sec- retary of Commerce W. A. Harriman points out, the job still isn’t over. “Not only the United States, but the whole world still lacks adequate supplies of fats and oils. And we in America are particularly short of in- dustrial fats.” These indus- trial fats, or their products, are needed-to make many things we use every day. The used fats you turn in will heip tide us over until supplies are normal. KEEP TURNING IN YOUR USED FaTS American Fat Salvage Committee, Ine. OF QUALITY | @ Courteous @ Quality l-lb.
