Conchs Stop St. Patrick Star, Win Third Straight, 42 to 26 SCORING* FIRST HALF SPREE OF DAN OGER --ENDED- KEY WEST LENGTHENED 18 - 17 HALF-TIME LEAD For two periods last night, Key West High had some troublesome Shamrocks in its hair but shook loose in the last half to lengthen an 18-17 half-time lead to a 42 to 26 victory over a spirited St. Pat- riok’s, High five of Miami at the high ‘school gym here. A’shock-haired youth named Dan Oger of St. Patrick’s was very much of an ogre to the Conchs in the first half, scoring 12 of his team’s 17 points, dribbling through and around the home team and leading a fast-breaking floor game. The lead see-sawed back and forth during the first-half, with baskets by Albert Parra, Bernie Papy and Robert Parks just about | matching Oger’s scoring spree. A long shot by Oscar Cruz put Key West in the lead a few seconds | before the half ended. During the intermission Coach N. H. Pepper outlined a defense for the bothersome Mr. Oger. In addition to having Parks cover him, Pepper ordered his team to post a loose man in the vicinity of the basket whenever on the de- fensive. Consequently, when Oger, who dribbles like a broken-field runner, either cut or dribbled to the basket he found another Conch in his way. Oger scored two points in the last half. In addition to perfecting its de- fense, Key West found its shoot- ing eye as the second half open- ed, Galey Sweeting, Papy, Cruz} and Parra scored in quick succes- sion to jump the lead from 18-17 to 26-17 before the Shamrocks scored again. The Conchs out- seored the visitors 24 to 9 in the last half for their third win in four starts, with only a one-point defeat marring their record. Papy, elected captain for the game, continued to set the scor- ing pace, his 16 points giving him high honors for both teams. The Conchs will face South Broward here next Friday. In the preliminary game last) night, Key West’s Junior Varsity swamped the St. Patrick Jayvees, 36 to 7. Between the halves of the varsity game, the school Booster Girls and a drum major contingent, led by Betty Spear, paraded to the music of the high school band and formed a sham- |\eeemeseews Connie Mack Tells Hamlin Athletics May Play Here Pirates Need Win Over Sox Sunday For Ist-Half Title The Pirates will be out trying to clinch the Winter League first-half championship tomor- row when they tackle the Blue Sox in the first game of a double- header at Municipal Stadium at 1:15 p. m.
