The budget provides for $11,- 000,000,000 for national defense; $7,000,000,000 for expenditures for veterans, and $5,000,000,000 for payment of interest on the national debt. The President estimated that $444,000,000 will be needed to continue activities in the field of atomic energy. Length of the budget is 1,563 pages. Printed copies of it were distributed among members of congress. Representative John Tabor, Re- publican, New York, fell far be- low the Taft proposal. He main- tained that the budget could be reduced to $29,000,000,000 and, with a reduction of expenditures that in no way will affect the stability of the government, that amount would be entirely ample. He explained that he has studied the fiscal structure of the government, and that he felt con- fident that the operation and maintenance of government cauld be kept within $29,000,000,- 000, if the government is dispos- ed to. practice economies in a multitude of agencies. di Taft and Tabor reasserted that they are determined to support legislation that will reduce the income tax orf personal incomes and to abolish so-called luxury taxes, The first measure will pro- Spitzbergen is.a frozen island |'yide much needed relief to in- dividuals from the burdensome taxes they have paid in the:last six years, and the second act will give small businesses relief from the imposition of taxes on mer- chandise which the government has characterized as luxuries.
