Let’s see who will turn out to be the bet- ter guesser. In expectancy, THE ORACLE. NEW YEAR REVELRY soit cee to be some “pee fal réaction * to «the. approach of a new year, “even if it is only marked by the calendar that has been adopted for the convenience of mankind. Conséquently, for many years, the’old year. has been rung out and the new year rung in. There is usually' the|of General Patton’s Third the ringing of bells, blowing of horns and the discharge of fireworks or firearms as the hour of mid- night marks the end of the! year. There’ is somewhat of a tendency on the part of in- dividuals to make a holiday of the occasion and to mark it: by “festivities which, at times, approach something of an orgy. Fortunately, the sires: of et d . ONE RESOLUAION Now that Christmas is past for this year, we look forward to New Year's Day. In looking forward, don’t begin already to make New Year's resolutions, and don't make them at all unless you are confident you can keep them. a All of us are in a position to make resolutions, for no- body is perfect. For that reason The Citizen feels it should not offer any sug- gestions for resolutions, with one exception, and that ap- plies to all of us as a com- munity. And how every member of the community will rejoice if the suggestion becomes a reality! The Citizen suggests that city and county officials resolve that, during 1947, they will whittle down ex- penditures, as you may be sure they will be whittled down by the federal gov- ernment, so that the tax burden may be eased. Good questions to ask are, do conditions justify this or that public expenditure? Are two men doing the work that one man can do? (Sen- ator Byrd of Virginia stated recently that, in many in- stances, one federal em- ploye ean do the work that is done now by four or five, and still will have time left for resting periods). Don’t‘ say, as oldtime lo- eal officials used to say, “Oh, well, it’s the city’s money, or the _ county’s money, so what’s the differ- ence?” Say, instead, it’s the people’s money, and that mean’s all the people. Not only the owners of real es- tate or of business places], pay tax. Hundreds may not pay taxes directly, but they pay indirectly, for the tax- able burden is so shifted that everybody feels it, in one way or another. City and county officials may feel confident that the people of Key West would be appreciative for a resolu- tion, to be put in effect, that would in any way reduce taxation. The dollar will do no more for you than you do for the dollar. F 'S PATTON’S THIRD ARMY ROUTE France, Belgium and Lux- embourg splan a “highway of freedom” to follow the route Army from the shore of Normandy into Germany. A recent ceremony in Metz marked the unveiling of the first milestone on the highway. It is somewhat interesting to note that the Russian del- egates to the United Nations are quick to support any charge of discrimination in other countries and that, in particular, they have sup- ported the charge of India that South Africa is mis- treating Indians in that country.
