Yours truly, THE ORACLE. “AY ‘QUESTION FOR YOU Ths cit Zen has received | from the United States Tre- | asury “department a tabloid of,18-sheets, containing ar-} ticles, fillers, editorials and | about ‘ cartoons, U. S.esav- ings bonds dS@gies E. : In gtimiing’ sover the | sheet, the thing that inter- ésted uSmore. than any- thing else was this ques- tion: “When did you last buy | au Savings bond? Judging by the long lines | that used to form at the lo- cal bank, that question could be changed aptly to read: “When did you sell your! last savings bonds?’ Citizen readers can recall | that, throughout the war and subsequently, we urged } | the people of Key West to buy all the savings bonds they were capable to buy, and, still more important, to keep‘ the bonds. Only in cases of emergencies, The! Citizen said, should the bonds be sold. We are aware of some Key Westers who adhered to that advice, and today, they are out of a job, they have something, readily convertible into money, to bolster them until they can find work. But the majority of the workmen, particularly in the Navy Yard, cashed their bonds as soon as they | were cashable, which was| it the expiration of oD days. ! F or some reason, to us, some ae SAR | were unable to realize that the bonds actually were better than dollars, for the} bonds drew interest andj the dollars did not, and the} bonds could be turned into] dollars whenever they were}! needed. In altogether too instances, the bonds turned into dollars when the dollars were not need. ed, and the result today is that the bonds are gone and also the dollars. War wages reached the} highest peak in the history | of the country, but it is not} the amount of wages or sal-| aries paid that count in the} run.
