Braman and women and |children, called to order a meet- jing which resulted in the organi- jzation of the oldest Baptist |Church in South or Central. On Christmas ;Day, 1842, ten individuals were |baptized, by immersion (the first manner on the Island). Early in 1843, Rules of Order, and a Church «Covenant © were adopted and the church was to be known as the Key West Bap- tist Church. The organization included both white and colored members, and the colored mem- bers remained the majority in number until the War Between the States, when a colored or- ganization was formed. Eaton Street Church First Name About 1879, the church was es- tablished on Eaton street and be- came known as the Eaton Street Baptist Church. In 1920, afer a legal controver- sy, the church re-organized and has since been known as the First Baptist Church. j Rev. T. J. Porter, ‘ pastor of jthe First Baptist Chureh-of Le- |banon, Kentucky, for the past 31 lyears, is the- oldest living pastor. His pastorate began in 1890 and Madison, Fia., \ partment. church has had 30 pastors se ing from three monthss to fi years. Rev. M. A. Clonts and Dr. Jas. Dav, Sr., were pastors serving twice each.
