SATURDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1942 MRS. MURDOCK Fars TAKES A CASE YESTERDAY: Just meeting a little man namec Perry Clarke has disturbed severat people who are not easily shaken. It frightened Ward Allen; tt roused instant dislike in Joyce Murdock, and it led Delia Stewart mto a quarrel with Ward, when he was the last man she wanted to dts- agree with. Now Joyce has gone home to find that Kent Murdock. her husband, has met his former wife Hestor again. And Hestor was married for a while to Clarke as well. Chapter Five ‘Go To Sleep!” ele MURDOCK heaved a; sigh of relief and grinned. | Not that he had done anything| out of line. but it was sometimes hard to explain such things and} he hadn’t known quite how Joyce would take it. At first that is. With Hestor staying in town for two or three months. it was like- | ly that Joyce would have to meet her some time. Still— “There’s one other thing.” he said. “She’s throwing a cocktail party tomorrow afternoon.” “Oh?” “Dean Thorndike will be there |. —his outfit handles some of her investments. vou know—and that wil! mean Ward Allen and Delia probably.. and some others. She wants to meet you.” “And what did vou tell her?” “T told her I didn’t know.” “But why Kent? Of course we'll go I’m dying to see her.” Murdock blinked and. unable to detect anvthing spurious in this spontaneity. decided there was still a lot he didn’t know about women. “Okay.” he said. “T’l call her in the morning. He watched her slip out of her negligee as he wound his watch. and saw that she wore one of his favorite nightgowns. a dark blue creation with wide shoulder straps and vards of skirt. Briefly. with elbows up. she gave a ‘inal shake to ashblond hair that es- caped straizhtness bv the merest trace of a natural wave and had a two-tone effect where the sun had bleached it around the edges: then she kicked off her mules and looked: over at him. slim and straight and vital. with a lovely. rounded bodv and curves that were firm and clean in line. He took note of all these things before he turned out the light be- cause it was inevitable that he make comparisons tonight. just as it was inevitable that he think of Hestor as he lay there staring up through the darkness. His surprise at hearing her voice was as nothing compared to his surprise at seeing her. It did not seem possible that she could be the same person he had once married. It had been an im- pulsive step. that marriage. with Hestor right out of the chorus of a musical comedy road-show that had closed in town. Worried ENT.” Joyce’s voice startled him and he wondered how long he had been thinking and whether he should pretend he was asleep. “Yes,” he said finally. “I'm worried about Delia and Ward.” “Worried? Why?” “Delia told me Ward left Ca- ragua because of some trouble. Hestor would know about it, wouldn’t she? And that man Clarke—if you could have seen Ward’s face when he looked up and saw him standing there. And afterwards—it frightened me.” Murdock grunted sleepily. “You're imagining things, aren’t you?” “T hope so.” That was all Joyce said for quite a while’ and he thought she had finished until she said: “It would be just too awful if anything broke them up. They’re so sweet together. Ward’s a changed man since he met her. He was never really anything but a playboy until Delia came along. Now. well. he’s different. He's working hard and he’s — more “os human. I think he’s.a swell per- son.” “Sure he is.” Murdock said. “And Delia. She had a low. throaty voice with an intimate quality end just the right inflection. “I hoped you surned with curiosity.” “I was curious too.” Joyce said. “Of course you were. And might have known he would pick out someone like you.” She smiled up at Murdock. “You're f_r luck- a than I had imagined you’d e. About thirty; Joyce thought, and on the surface, flawlessly she had a magnificent figure set off by a black crepe tea-gown that was long and _ straight-hanging from the hips and topped by a brief jacket. A natural golden-yellow, her hair-do was the work of a master; was smooth and unlined and there was a polished precision in every move, every gesture. She found the light blue eyes upon her and smiled back. “Shall we go meet some peo- ple?” “festor asked. Then takin; Murdock’s arm: “You won’t min if I monopolize him for a little while? There’s so much Id like to know about you both.” Presently Joyce fpund herself with a Scotch and soda in her hand and Ward Allen at her elbow. RECEIVES ORDERS ON APPOINTMENTS Chief Recruiter H. M.
